Hey everyone, I'm a 20 year Old looking to move away from the big apple and escape the cold and move down to Florida. I have applied(and pretty much gotten) two jobs in FL. One in Lakeland Regional Airport and the other in MIA. Ive read that Miami is one of the most miserable cities so Lakeland it is.

Ive been doing some research for quite awhile but My question is where is the best place to live near the airport? Ive seen village at lake highland and also seen alexan at lakeside village which looks amazing. Are there any apartment complexes with amenities(pool, gym etc) that is in a good area, near the airport and with things to do near by? (shopping, movies)

I know people will say it will be hard to adjust from nyc to FL but there's not much I really can do here at this time, too young for all the bars and clubs. All I really do now is movies and restaurants. When I do turn 21 however, I do plan on going out to a bar or club every now and then.

As for rent I think more or less around the $800-$1000 range is fine.

Thanks!

I really wouldn't base where I live on those goofy Forbes-type top ten lists. Lakeland isn't a bad city, but you might be in for a culture shock coming from New York City. I think Lakeland has some bars and stuff downtown, but as a young guy, you'll probably find yourself driving over to Tampa a lot.

Lakeland is a nice little city, but slow as far as night life, etc. even by Florida standards.

The apartments near Lakeside Village are a good bet - all new, and the area is terrific. Lakeside Village is really, really nice, and you will be near the airport there.

The good thing about Lakeland is that it is a short hop to Tampa for more night life, and not too far from Orlando, either.

Thanks for all the replies! I guess I will be heading into Tampa on the weekends I guess, But that will be much better than commuting everyday from tampa.

Are there any other apartment complexes besides village at lake highland and Alexan?

I have lived at Village of Lake Highlands. It is a really great place. Just don't live lakeside- the frogs will drive you crazy at night during the mating season.

My fiancé and I (25 and 27) are moving to Lakeland in May from Pennsylvania after we get married. We are getting a house built for us near the airport, but we did see some apartments as a backup.

Take for example these, near the gorgeous Lakeside Village Mall
Welcome to Alexan at Lakeside Village

You found them too. They are much nicer than what we have in PA right now, and cheaper. And in a great place! Lots of shops and restaurants nearby (between that mall and South Florida Ave) and the Polk Parkway is right there and will get you on I4 in no time. Those apartments almost made me want to forget getting a house! Within walking distance to an IMAX theater and a Crispers (my new favorite restaurant, it makes Panera Bread look sad by comparison).

There are apartments across the street from there too that seemed nice. I forget the name.

They are also doing road improvements in that area. To get from those apartments to the airport I believe they made some new roads, one of which is only six months old and the other is currently under construction to bypass the light I am already affectionately calling the train track light from hell. Well, you probably wouldn't go that way to the airport, but still.

It all depends what you are looking for, but even from PA/Nj where we are from the only thing I think we will be missing in Lakeland is good pizza and bagels! We loved it when we went down last month house hunting, and can't wait to move.

Oh and it's 35 minutes to Tampa, 45 to Orlando from that area of Lakeland. At least the way I drive!
