WHY cut salaries when gas is going UP?

Does this country not understand how things work? and if you don't have a salary you can't buy stuff? to HMM Support the "economy"???

I am very sorry but this to me is VERY DUMB. You cannot cut people's way of PAYING FOR THINGS, especially when "things" prices are going up! it makes no sense and there is NO logic behind it.

Yeah, its rough, but "this country" does not control the price of oil.
Speculators/investors control the price of oil. The world is in serious economic distress. Please don't slam the U.S.A.

I wonder what cutting pensions for teachers would do to the budget; provide a 401k-plan as many of the private-sector corporations are currently doing to stay alive.

If I am not mistaken, you are retired with a pension, right?

For the record, I have a defined contribution plan but I don't want those teachers to have their pension cut. Already teachers make a small salary compared to many fields. If teachers are not paid enough with benefit then only those who have no where to go will be teachers and I don't think that's the way to raise the standard of education.

"The plan incorporates expenditure savings in most of the state's major policy areas, but school districts statewide would feel the largest burden because of local property tax reductions and the loss of federal stimulus education funds," Moody's said in a written comment.

Wouldn't it be great if everyone earned a pension? I believe you can expect pensions to be a thing of the past, as the private sector has shown a decade ago. Not sure why gov't hasn't followed suit.
