Im considering moving to the Tampa area, just wondering how big, or small, the IT job market is in the area? Also, hows the pay down there? Im currently working in NJ and making 65k as a network administrator. Would i be able to find jobs that pay that well there, or are they few and far between? Thanks for any help.

I have a few friends in the IT field, mostly Software Engineers/Network Administrators for Financial Services and Health Care industries. None of them make less than 70k per year, one makes close to six figures.

Hi, I can't tell you first hand, but I do know that my neighbor did IT in NY on LI and since moving here 6 months ago, is now doing real estate. His wife said that it's just not the market here like it was back home. Do your research before coming.

IT market in tampa is pretty small. When I was in Tampa (about eight years ago), I can count number of IT companies with two hands. However, since then, a couple of Financial services companies relocate there. Maybe that will help. The only positive side is that there are not that many qualified people. So all balanced out.

But no way you can compared IT market with NJ market. That's just no comparsion there.

I am the former Sr VP of an IT firm here and Tampa and we paid all of our consultants at least $65, based on experience of course.
I am also still in touch with several firms here in Tampa.
Send me a PM if you would like some help.

It also depends on exactly what you do and what languages you know. Are you a LAMP developer, .NET guru, or more mainstream C++,JAVA..???? Also how much real world experience do you have? There are a couple of defense contractors in the area, Raytheon the most notable, and some larger firms that do their own s/w development. I am a S/W eng, graduated from USF in 97' and have worked in various jobs here since then. The market is obviously not like Atlanta, Denver or up north, but if your patient, you can find a good opportunity. Make sure you check monster, dice and all the tech job boards. Sign up for the daily emails of job postings and you will get a sense of what the area has to offer.
