While I agree that the Bay area has its share of healthy people, I don't know that this particular statement means anything... Publix only has a significant presence in Florida and Georgia. Florida is by far their largest market so it is no surprise that all three are in FL, and that one is here in Tampa.

But anyway, perspective on this depends a lot on where you spend your time. If you have a health club membership (and use it), you can't help but be surrounded by folks with healthy intentions. Also, I'm just guessing... but I imagine some types of jobs have higher concentrations of health conscious people.

Yeah, unfortunately, healthy living really comes down to socioeconomics. It seems like it's mostly a white-collar white professional thing.

Well- I feel Tampa breeds healthy lifestyles partially because we dont wear a lot of clothing year round, and the booming singles scene. People also tend to be shallow, which breeds a healthy lifestyle. As a single guy, when I look at a potential match, for whatever reason, I look for someone fit and well put together. That is PART OF the reason I spend two hours a day in the gym (along with self satisfaction, sheer enjoyment of working out, feeling good about myself, feeling strong and able bodied, career progression, and the overall opinion I have that people are often judged by their looks, at least initially). Hard work pays off in the singles scene, and a lot of people share my view. It perpetuates the healthy lifestyle amongst both men and women. When people get older and grow out of the singles scene and settle down, they have likely formed good habits and continue a healthy lifestyle.

I would say the healthy lifestyle is neighborhood specific, but this is true for any city. I think you could easily get off a plane for the first time in Tampa, Orlando, FTL, and find healthy fit people pretty easy. I suspect this is not the case in Omaha or Des Moins.

Yep, six pack is pre-requisite if you want to talk with a girl in SoHo, otherwise might as well chat with a wall.
