52k would be MORE than enough for a single person... my family of 3 lives comfortably in a 1300/month house in Brandon around 50k/year and still have a good amount of disposable income.

Depends..your best friend would be a paycheck calculator

52K in Tampa -> ~ $3300 per month
65K in NYC --> ~ $3800 per month

The difference is too low to sway the decision.

I would vote for either NYC or Tampa depending on the potential growth in job opportunity.

I would take NYC in a heartbeat over Tampa, but only if you are willing to share an apartment. You can always leave, but you might never get the chance to live there easily again if you pass it up now.

Using the cost of living calculator on salary.com, the cost of living in NYC is 73.9% higher than Tampa. To maintain the same standard of living you would need to make about $90K in NYC. The site also notes that employers in NYC only pay about 26% more than in Tampa, meaning you are likely to earn about $65K for the same job. This last point seems to be spot on with your situation.

If you are young and wanting to get your career going, go to NYC. The potential to make great connections through networking would be far greater in NYC. Once you get established and progress your career you may want to think about moving to Tampa Bay when thinking about starting a family.

Fo'gettaboutit

Who needs money? Go to NYC - you can sleep on the trains. See the big city. Pee in the park. All that good stuff.

Don't do it. In NY you'll be paying 10% for city and state income tax. That alone drops your take home pay by $6,500. Then the cost of living is ridiculous. A small 1 bedroom apartment in a decent part of Manhattan will be $1,800 a month- minimum. Parking will be an additional $300-500 a month. Food is expensive, entertainment is expensive, everything is expensive. You need at least a 50% raise to move up there and live a similar lifestyle to what you have in FL. In Tampa $52k is a great salary for a single person. In NY $65k is mediocre and barely allows you to survive.

Thanks for all the help everyone, I definitely will stick to Tampa for now, since all I will be doing is work and not much else. I think I will relocate after 2 years when I have the opportunity to relocate. I rather have some money in the bank to invest early on too. NY is tempting, but I'll wait when the economy is fully running again.
