I'm relocating from Portland Maine and am considering the Tampa area. I currently work in Hospitality Management and would be staying in the hospitality industry in one form or another. I love Portland, the small city feel, the ocean air, the pub style nightlife (vs the annoying fist pumping club scene) but I absolutely HATE THE WEATHER. I am looking for a place to live in Tampa or a surrounding area that is near the beach. I'm a 31 y/o single professional so I'm not looking for an area that can be confused with "Gods waiting room" but I also don't care to be in area that is consider the "club scene". I'm looking for that happy medium: a small town feel with plenty of restaurants and a spark of life. Hospitality jobs are fairly easy to come by so I'm focusing on a lifestyle and a safe neighborhood over the job market. I'm looking to rent in the $500-$750 range and preferably dog friendly. Any insight and specifics that could be offered would be greatly appreciated since trying to narrow things down from across the country can become a bit daunting.

Well.. I would check out St. Pete or Clearwater even though you are going to have Seniors and snowbirds but there are also lots of other tourist. Downtown St Pete has some quaint areas.

S Tampa would also work but finding an apt in your price range might be difficult.

Sarasota instead, if you can find work there. I was going to suggest reading the local newspapers, but no matter what paper you might read online, they all seem extremely tabloid. I'd start in Sarasota and look around from there. Not Tampa. I think that Tampa is still figuring out what it's all about. There is one place - unusual - more funky - Treasure Island?

What's that supposed to mean?

Tampa is basically all suburbs of a downtown core that closes up after office hours, and no beaches i've ever found, the beaches are over in St Pete.
Hospitality industry would probably be better almost anywhere else, i'd key my job search on an area between St Augustine and Ft Lauderdale.

I agree with this, especially since you (OP) are in the hospitality industry. Sarasota has TONS of restaurants, and of course is well-known as a vacation destination. It's a small artsy city with big-city amenities. Sure, we have our share of retirees here, but also plenty of people of all ages. We have three major small colleges here. Search the Sarasota forums for more good info.

And Sarasota has the most beautiful beaches on the Gulf Coast!

You saying Downtown Tampa is a thriving metropolis after 6pm? you'll have to tell me where the action is hiding.
And that the surrounding area isnt just hundreds of thousands of generic bungalows?

I'm telling you that Downtown Tampa is still slow after 6, but not a ghost town and better than a decade ago. I'm telling you that Tampa has half a dozen entertainment areas that are hopping. I'm telling you that the City of Tampa proper is full of architecturally-distinct neighborhoods

Of course the city is surrounded by bland cookie-cutter subdivisions, but name a city that isn't.
