1700-1800 will get you a killer place in SoHo. that is where you want to be. For that price, you might also want to check out the downtown skyscrapers "Skypoint" (condo- private rentals) and its near-twin "Element" (Apartment). This is a few miles from SoHo, but a southern view unit in these places have the best views availible in central florida and the gulf coast.

Why the hell would you spend 1800 for rent when you can BUY for much less than that?

No Maintenance costs
No Lawn maintenance
No Mortgage
Does not know how long he will stay in Tampa
Does not want to find house from 2k miles
No homeowners insurance
No HOA/Condo fees
etc

There are a lot of reasons why you don't want to buy property, income level does not dictate when you should buy a house or a condo.

Besides what tewas mentioned, having a mortgage is basically 1/4th of the Machine ala Princess Bride that literally sucks your soul from you. Homeownership, unlike what the mythos may say, is not for everyone.

CRAIGM1841:
I was looking up apartments and reviews in the st pete/tampa area and I had seen a review or blog and saw you were originally from Long Island, NY. I just sadly, and recently moved down here (just graduated from grad school) from there... really miss it. I just accepted the job in the area and start up sometime probably next month. I wanted to know how you like it down here and what is there to do? And where in li are you from?
