You're right, though. Tampa has always been more "industrial," while St. Pete has historically relied on tourism. As a result, you see a lot more gritty warehouse and factory-like buildings in Tampa and a lot more Land Boom-era hotels and stuff in St. Pete.

Yeah, Wilmington's situation is a real shame; can't help but think that most of the town would be better off razed. And then you drive into town and see those "Wilmington: a great place to be somebody" signs -- depressing to the point of laughable.

I am in a similar situation... I am making the move this fall. I started to read and research for neighborhoods that have the same walkability that I am used to in Philly. I am 40 single. I see you like the 'small town' feel so your criteria is a bit different than mine. Here is a map link I started to map out some of the recommended places to live, with a few notes copied from some of the threads on this forum. Hopefully it may help a bit.

Nice map. That's a pretty good idea. One correction, though: The part of South St. Pete that you labeled as a bad area is actually where South St. Pete starts to revert to being a normal, decent area. The bad part of South St. Pete is inside about Central Avenue (or perhaps 175), 4th Street, 49th Street, and 30th Avenue South. The closer you get to Pinellas Point, the better.

I like the map idea. I wonder if we can all expand on it. It may be very helpful. Took me a lot of driving around looking at areas when moving from Orlando looking at areas.

I think a wiki map of sorts would be good... except as you can see people have different opinions of where good and bad begin and finish. I actually just added that section based on a thread specific to St. Pete??

I think it will be a good starting point for when I actually travel down to scout out areas. I like the fringe areas, as long as they are close to where I want to be. I don't necessarily have the same safety issues many others do.
