Is there much of alternative country (alt-country), americana, indie music or anything like that?

For some reason, I imagine a straight commercial country and very commercial rock scene. Is that about right?

Are you talking about local bands and venues or the local radio stations?

If it's the former, you can find local shows for most genres. I've been to a few punk shows and at least one blues-type show. There are two free newspapers--the TBT and Creative Loafing--that do a good job of advertising local shows.

If it's the latter, well, our radio market is pretty much like the rest of the country's.

As a musician working in the Tampa Area I can tell you it's "Classic Rock 60's, 70's" first, then "Country", "Blues", then a hodgepodge of 80's, Metal, Jazz, Do-Wop/Oldies, etc.

Lot's of Boomers in the Tampa area they are fixated on classic rock.

A lot of people are surprised to hear this, but the small city of Sarasota (50 some miles south of Tampa) has a burgeoning indie music scene. Here is one of the websites that will give you info:

SarasotaMusicScene.com | Sarasota's source for original local music

There have been a lot of writeups about the amount of talent down here in southwest Florida. So if you are down this way you might want to check it out.

We're just starting the search, since we'll be wintering in Dunedin next fall. We love alt-country, although bluegrass and its relatives, and blues are good too. So far we've discovered the Dunedin Brewery which has decent live music quite often. But we're looking, I can tell you!

I think Skipper's Smokehouse up on Skipper Road in Tampa has quite a few blues shows.

Hmm...you just made me real interested in Sarasota!

I've driven through there, and LIKED it. I've always been slightly indifferent to Tampa Bay, outside of the beaches of Clearwater.

You've just got me more interested in looking at Sarasota

It doesn't hurt to check it out. Include Bradenton there, too, there are some cool alt country bands from there (check out "Have Gun Will Travel"). It's all one region, really (Sarasota/Bradenton). People always talk about this being nothing but retirement, but most of those people don't live here. once upon a time that was true, but there is a WHOLE lot more going on here today than say 15 years ago. We do have a number of small colleges here after all.
