I'm looking at buying a teardown in the old seminole heights area. The lot is great, except there are a couple of good-sized trees right smack where it makes most sense to build a new house.

I'd like to hear from anyone with experience about how difficult it may be to get a permit to remove these trees. My goal would be to replace them with twice as many new trees at the other end of the lot.

Depends on the type and size of the trees.
If they are grand daddy oaks you could have some problems.

You could make it part of the purchase contract that they have to remove the tree prior to closing. I have never done the permit thing but did just cut some trees down myself without one, I dont advise you do that because if you get caught, they fine badly.

It seems kind of silly to have to get a permit to remove trees on property you own. HOAs have made home ownership an undesirable chore.

It's not HOAs. The City regulates certain types of tree removal. In Sem Hts I removed a huge grandfather oak. It was diseased and falling down in chunks. The tree trimmer will pull the permits for you and tell you if there is an issue. On one lot we sold which was loaded with oaks the buyer was able to remove trees and build.

I'd start by contacting a tree cutting service and get a quote on cost for what you want and ask if they see any permit issues. Confirm they will pull the permit. Might want to add that suggested contingency, but I don't think the City can stop you from building otherwise they are about to buy a new park.

I'm not condoning this BUT, there are ways to make a tree sick. Have seen the results but have never done it... just sayin' - it happens.

Shame on you for even suggesting that. Anyone making a tree "sick" will still have to dispose of it at cost.

It's not HOA's, it's city, county and state laws...

If you try to kill a protected tree in Tampa the fines have become huge. A few years back people would cut them down to build and gladly pay the small fine. Not anymore. Kill a tree intentionally and your neighbors will probably rat you out. I'd hope so at least.

I think that is pretty much guaranteed, especially in any kind of historic neighborhood, which I believe Old Seminole Heights is one.
