I have heard many advise caution when dealing with south St Pete. However, I noticed there are some nice looking neighborhoods, eg near Clam Bayou, Broadwater, Bayview to name a few.

Is the entire area a safety concern or only pockets?

Midtown is where you don't want to be. LOTS of the rest of it is safe.

Exactly ^^^,Midtown area is where most people are referring when they say "south St. Pete." There are plenty of beautiful neighborhoods in the southern part of the city, which are safe.

I'd never heard of that neighborhood before, but it turns out its a few blocks on the Gulfport side of 49th Street. Gulfport is--as a whole--a pretty safe place, but the 49th Street corridor is the sketchier side of town, simply because some elements of South St. Pete slip over the city line.
