We thought we could easily get into our neighborhood here for $600k and wound up having to fork over closer to $800k for a decent place.

Every place in the country has enclaves of ridiculously priced housing...the reputation for cheap housing usually extends past the city or refers to starter places, etc.

I'm going to have to completely disagree with this whole premise. Granted, if you want waterfront with several hundred thousand dollars of upgrades already included, your $500k is a bit low.

$500k today is a house that was $1.0M to $1.5M at the peak. There are some incredible properties in this price range. You can buy waterfront fixer uppers for $250k, but if you want to be in a high priced neighborhood (say, Davis Islands next to Derek Jeter's house or Harbour Island next to Tommy Frank's house), then start saving your pennies.

I'll bet that someone didn't do their homework and/or limited themselves to a few very high-end areas.

What part of Texas do you live in ?

You can find houses like what was posted earlier in the thread for less then $150k in Houston.

Umm yeah, $500K in one of the most desirable places of town will not go too far. Hope they budgeted for their insurance costs, especially being in a flood zone.

Lots of people make the mistake thinking that their budget is, for example, $200K or whatever. Its a number they pull from the air more or less. Then when they investigate how ridiculous property insurance is here their budget is actually 175K or so due to the monthly payment being increased significantly based on their insurance premium.

Property taxes vary greatly depending on where you live. Some are not bad, some a pretty darn high.

Other than his street and maybe 1/3 of the houses on Davis island, that place isn't quite as nice as its hyped up to be.
I work there all of the time, most of the houses are old, not very well maintained small houses that wouldn't be worth 50k if it wasn't for the "reputation" of Davis island. There is only one road in and one road out, heaven forbid a hurricane come, that place will be under water and there will be a parking lot sitting on the bridges to get out. I guess if I had to find something positive about it I would say that your minutes away from the best hospital in the area.

They were shocked because they were looking on expensive Davis Island and nowhere else. Their agent did not present better options for them and acted on pure self interest.
