If beaches are going to be a major factor in your motivation to move you may want to consider The St Pete/Sarasota area as Tampa has very little in the way of beaches by comparison.

If cat 3 or higher coming to Tampa, i'm packing my stuff and heading inland/north where i can stay for some time, depending on severity of the hurricane.
Also to OP: Vacations are nice here, all you care is to find a place on the beach or how to spend the day without being bored. Living on the other hand gives you things like jobs (traffic here is not the most friendly), groceries (i found out that food here is a little more expensive then midwest. Now everything but on average i feel i pay more than i used to), insurance (really nasty and expensive, it tripped for my car), weather and utility bills (say hello to AC for 5-6 months). All in all it's fairly nice place to live, if you have a job, manage to find free time for yourself to enjoy what Florida can give to you. Is it worth moving here? Well if had the job i do here in midwest, i would have not moved here, but since i'm here i'm trying to get the most out of it (too bad i can't get snow )

Very good topic and very good info is given. I've been looking to myself to find a condo (not expensive) since I've been coming to Florida frequently this past year tho I've been on the other side of Florida the last couple visits. Soon, I'll be traveling in your area here and will look around. Do hurricanes hit more often on the Gulf side than the Atlantic side~? I really am in no hurry to find a place, just seems like it would be cheaper than where I normally have been staying.

It's hard to say if hurricanes hit more often on GUlf side vs Atlantic. Panhandle of FL and big bend area get hurricanes up there more than Tampa/St. Pete (no direct hit here since the 20's I think) but south of Tampa, Port Charlotte/Ft Myers/Naples gets more hits. However, hurricanes early in the season like to scrape up the east coast as well. I'm 43 and the most I've seen in my lifetime, have come across the state from the Atlantic and by the time they get here are tropical storms/depressions which is still no joke. However, be aware of regular, daily torrential rains we get in the summer. We have a joke here in south Tampa that when you spit, it floods. Very poor drainage down here.
