Or avoid the intersection and find an alternate route to where you want to go.
And stop voting for the people who pass these punitive laws.
This is what I do. It's a nightmarish hassle.

The red light cameras are an excellent idea especially in central Florida where there are so many red light running fools. Would you still be opposed to the cameras if you were t-boned while crossing the intersection? Those are possibly the most horrific types of accidents with a high fatality rate. Sticking a police officer at an intersection all day is absurd as they have other problems to deal with. Extending the yellow is a good idea to allow drivers adequate time to get through the intersection. But I have absolutely no sympathy for the red light runners.

Red light cameras are not like arms coming down at a RR crossing to stop traffic. No amount of cameras at an intersection will stop someone who disregards cross traffic already in the intersection or didn't see the traffic light. Sending the owner of the vehicle a $158 fine for a traffic light being red for .2 of a second is just a revenue grabbing scam.
The company getting the contract to install and maintain the cameras will get $25 of each violation. They control the traffic timing box. What do yu think they do to boost revenue? They state that they are from Arizona, but the parent company is in Australia.
btw- ask your local politician how much money they got from the camera company for their 're-election compaingn' coffers.

I think if the difference in getting or not getting a $158 ticket is .2 of a second it certainly wouldnt take much effort to avoid the ticket .
As for it being a "revenue grabbing scam"?depends on how you look at it.
Municipality tells every one they are putting up cameras to catch people who run red lights, some one runs through the red light and gets a $158 ticket did he get scammed or is he a victim of his own stupidity?

Yet it clearly does. Hang out at Waters & Dale Mabry for a few minutes and you'll see that NO ONE is running the light anymore, when that same intersection was not too long ago notorious for red light running. As for not seeing the traffic lights, lol. Maybe if they hang up their stupid phones they might notice that they are approaching a major intersection. It's not like we are talking about a light out in the middle of nowhere that is usually a flashing yellow, these are big intersections. If someone doesn't notice the traffic lights in Tampa, they need to get their eyes examined or simply cut out the distractions and pay better attention to their driving.

Curious - Are there signs at the intersections where these cameras are located, notifying you there a red light cameras?

Up here no red light cameras yet but there are many speed cameras, they are all clearly marked a quarter mile before the camera with a large posted speed sign right next to the large warning sign ,yet people are getting their picture taken with an ensuing expensive ticket in the mail all day long,i cant believe people are too lazy to slow down to the posted speed..

This is an EXCELLENT question...I may take a drive this week just to answer it. If this is truly about safety, there should be LARGE signs well before the intersection letting people know about these cameras.

I'm betting there are no signs.

Does anyone know the locations of the cameras in St. Pete? I know of one in Kenneth City and there is not a sign letting you know the camera is present.
