My husband is going to be working in downtown St. Petersburg. We have two children under the age of 5, so we are looking for a very nice, family friendly, SAFE neighborhood within a 45 min drive including traffic. Cost is not an issue. Please help me and point me in good direction to start looking for housing. Thanks so much!

Just get an apartment for a while. Anyone who even CONSIDERS just moving here and immediately buying a home is stupid. Just about anywhere in North St Pete should suite your needs.

We are looking to rent for at least the first year until we have a good idea of the area and schools. I am asking for info on good condos/townhomes in good neighborhoods to rent at. Of course I would hire a real estate agent if we were buying.

You want to be in NE St. Pete, or if you're willing to cross a bridge, S. Tampa. No need to really look anywhere else.

I'm not familiar with the schools in NE St. Pete but S. Tampa has great schools, just be careful of the area. For S. Tampa you want to look north of Gandy blvd and south of Kennedy.

I think I've heard the old northeast neighborhood in St. Pete is nice. Nice older homes.

I don't know about rental availability but some good areas for your research are Old Northeast, Old Kenwood, Crescent Lake, Coffee Pot Bayou, and Snell Isle. Shore Acres is also nice but now that our weather is crazy, you should know that it floods there quite often. If you look these up on a map, you will see they are all in the same general area and close enough for an easy commute.

Look at two neighborhoods in northeast St. Pete (the Old Northeast and Snell Isle), Tierra Verde, South Tampa (south of Kennedy and north of Bay to Bay), and the gated communities in Safety Harbor (if you're into cookie-cutter gated).
