Some updates. The Rex, a craft beer bar owned by the same guy who owns the Independent, is for sale. I think the asking price is 75k. A new World of Beer location is planned for downtown St. Pete. It will be located in the old Paddy O'Burke's location and is the second World of Beer to be built in St. Pete (the other one's on 4th st N). There is also a gastropub with 30+ taps called Tryst opening on beach drive and a brewery opening up in St. Pete later this year (depending on whether the zoning regulations will be changed to accommodate this). The beer scene is growing at an exceedingly rapid rate in the Tampa Bay area.

Oh, and Stiegl is a damn fine beer.

I can never remember the name of The Rex - thank you. I haven't been there in a while. I hope it doesn't close down. There's a great little seafood cafe right next door where you can order a sandwich and they'll bring it over to you in The Rex when it's ready.

I heard there is going to be a good pizza joint opening in conjunction with the World of Beer downtown; I'm excited for that. Paddy O'Burke's was the lamest attempt at an Irish bar I've ever seen - good ridance.

Sadly, Island Seafood also closed. I had never eaten there but I heard it was good (if a little overpriced). Yeah, the pizza place is called Pete's Wood Fired Pizza (although it just says Wood Fired Pizza on the outside). The original one is in Tampa. They have all types of super thin crust, creative pizzas. Fig, pancetta, arugula, and gorgonzola, hello! They also plan on having a decent craft beer list. In addition to this place, there is supposedly going to be a gourmet burger bar opening up just blocks away at the old location of Buona Vita. Not sure of the name or when it's scheduled to open but it's supposed to be legit.

Where is the Rex? Now that would be a dream, to run a place like that!

Someone mentioned a smokey bar--what's the situation with smoking and bars? Is smoking not banned completely in such places? Is it a State thing, a local municipal thing?

The Rex is in the Grand Central District on Central Ave in St. Pete. I'm not sure what the cross street is but it's right next to a tattoo shop and around one block or so from Haslam's bookstore. It's also really close to Taco Bus. I think that as long as bars don't serve food, they can allow smoking inside. There are several bars in St. Pete that are smoker friendly (Mastry's and The Emerald come to mind). I'm not sure if that's a state, county, or municipal thing.

State thing...
In Florida, you cannot smoke in places that primarily serve food. If your establishment is a bar, that also happens to have a small selection of finger foods, then you can allow smoking indoors. I am not certain where the dividing line is for percentage of food sales. Places like Miller's Ale House (chain bar/restaurant) mitigate this by having an outdoor bar and an indoor bar.

I have always hated sitting in a smoke-filled bar; but I am apparently a minority.

I think it's around 22nd St. and it's on the north side of Central (on the right if you're heading away from downtown). It's a great bar.

Stiegl Beer shows up in some surprising places and it is always a favorite...

I used to order 24 bottles for Thanksgiving every year... now I can find it locally.

Luekens Liquors in Dunedin (Patricia and Main Street) has an amazing variety of craft beers at reasonable prices. I've only been to Dunedin and Clearwater stores. The Dunedin one seems to have more selection.

No, you're not. It's disgusting.

While they have a good beer selection, I won't step foot again in Three Birds Tavern on 4th. Apparently the smokers have figured out that the owners don't abide by the law -- when I sat down to eat I realized I was the only person in there not filling my lungs with the rich, satisfying flavor of cancer. I got up and left.
