Hello everyone. I am considering a move to the Tampa area. I have a job offer to work right in downtown Tampa. I am curious about the neighborhoods and suburbs now. I am really looking for a suburb that is very close to the water because I would plan on getting a jet ski and would like easy access to the water. I am also looking for a very safe area like the typical young family types of areas. My budget for a house is around $250,000. I guess I am just looking for a great, safe suburb close to the water where I won't have a terrible commute. I have a friend who lives in Bradenton and he loves it and I love it as well but I know that would be a long commute. Are there any areas similar to Bradenton but closer to Tampa for my commute?

To add more details, commute time I am looking for nothing more than 20-25 minutes with trafic (hopefully). I will be working monday through friday 8:00 to 5:00. Schools are also important to me because I plan on starting a family. I also plan on buying a home.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You are not going to find a place on the gulf or even close to it with a 20-25 min drive to downtown Tampa. You might find a place 'close' to the bay but there are very few places that will meet your commute time requirement in your price range.

You might look around Feather Sound, Oldsmar and Safety Harbor however the last 2 will be a longer drive. Unless you have dogs/cats I would rent so you can get a lay of the land

The closer you get to the coast, the more expensive it is to own the home. Home insurance is higher and you may even need sink hole insurance.

Golfman, how big of a house are you looking for? SF, BD, BA, Garage, Pool? Are schools important?

Riverview, Ruskin and Apollo Beach are all close to Gulf Beaches and Little Harbor is a hidden gem out here where folks jet ski

Apollo Beach has a lot of good deals right now too. St. Pete also has some communities not so far from the water. Depends on what your criteria is-how close you'd like to be to the water. For instance I've seen some really affordable homes in Tropical Shores in St. Pete. Some across the street from the water, with a boat ramp 1/4-1/2 mile away for under 250k. Very friendly neighborhood close to downtown St. Pete.
