Couldn't believe how bad the roads get in and around Kennedy/Bayshore/Willow....saw tens of cars stranded and rivers running through several major intersections. And the Selmon Expressway at the ST Pete Times Forum was like a lake - Gives me a healthy respect for flood warnings in the area. Don't ever want to be in that area again when there's a heavy rain shower.

Anyone have a problem today?

Streets flood, cars stall as storms sweep Tampa Bay

Cars stalled and streets overflowed as a line of storms, which meteorologists say will continue Monday, swept through the region Sunday.

Bay News 9 meteorologist Brian McClure attributed the downpour to a "classic southwest wind flow," which carried numerous storms and showers off the Gulf of Mexico.

Manatee County, which had received 2 to 4 inches of rain by 4 p.m., was hit hardest, barely edging out Hillsborough County, which received 1 to 2 inches of precipitation, McClure said.

Officials issued an urban flood advisory in the Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and Parrish areas, warning folks to avoid low-lying areas. The Interstate 75 corridor also was affected, McClure said.

In Hillsborough, Tampa was among the cities to receive the most rainfall. Motorists reported that cars were stalling and jamming traffic as they tried to traverse what resembled a river on Kennedy Boulevard.

On a smaller scale, McClure said, Pinellas County also saw several passing showers and storms.

The showers knocked temperatures down from the high 80s and low 90s and into the 70s. So far, the region's rainfall is within normal ranges for this time of year, McClure said.

Tampa, especially downtown and South Tampa, floods pretty bad when it suddenly rains hard. I totaled my old Porsche by driving through too much water when this happened. (Long story.) I guess you just have to be careful and if you have to pull over and wait it out, that's what you have to do.

One last thing I want to mention... one of my biggest fears since moving here is what Tampa would look like in a hurricane. I can't even imagine the flooding/dangers.

Tampa - especailly the downtown peninsula would be totally flooded if we get a big tropical storm hit (or worse).......I saw so many cars stalled it was unbelievable. I wanted to get out and help push many of them, but had to manage my car. Definitely not a situation that I want to get in again - saw a TAXI nearly completely submerged - looked like 4 feet of water in some spots.

That photo gives one an idea of the water there. Had no idea this happened downtown.
It didn't rain that much in North Pinellas....

My husband said even his PARKING GARAGE was flooded last Friday!

Downtown and south Tampa is terrible for flooding, it always has been and I guess it always will be. One of the big negatives for anyone living or wanting to live there.

I looked down several side streets and saw several cars nearly completely submerged. Definitely an area that will receive major flood damage if we ever get hit by a hurricane or major storm.
