I would like to hear from anyone with experience with any of the private schools in lakeland. My daughter will be starting kindergarten next fall. We will be living in the south Lakeland area. I have checked out great schools website, but I would like to hear from people with actual experience in any of the private schools. I need to find a place to start at least because my wife and daughter wont be moving down until the summer, so that doesnt leave a lot of time to make decisions. Thank You.

Hello and welcome to Polk County. There are a lot of private schools in Lakeland. I'm familiar with several but my children attended All Saints in Winter Haven. It's actually closer to parts of south Lakeland than to my home on the opposite side of Winter Haven.
Do you have any specific criteria? Most of the private schools in the area are religiously affiliated. A large part of our decision was made because we are mainline Protestants and All Saints is Episcopalian. I believe there are three Catholic elementary schools and one high school in Lakeland. Lakeland Christian starts with pre-school and finished with 12th grade. It's more conservative than All Saints with religious studies forming a larger part of the curriculum.
I realize your daughter is starting kindergarten however if you intend on keeping her in private schools through high school that might affect your decision. We have three children and if we lived in South Lakeland we would have sent them all to St. Paul's Lutheran and then transferred to either All Saints, Lakeland Christian or the IB program at Bartow High School.

Thanks for the reply. Would you happen to know the names of the catholic schools? Would there be any chance of getting her in a charter school or do they all have long waiting lists? Thanks again.

The Catholic schools in Lakeland are Resurrection, St. Joseph's and St Anthony's. I've heard good things about all three. Resurrection is located on the south side.
Magnet and choice school enrollment starts in January. Magnet school's enroll using a lottery system and the wait lists can be long. Charter school enrollment dates vary depending on the schools. The Polk county school board maintains a fairly good website providing information.

One point I neglected to mention with the magnet/choice schools in Polk. The bus schedules can be inconvenient and the rides very long especially for a young child.

Thank you. I will check those out. Are magnet and choice schools the same thing? I haven't heard of choice schools.

It gets complicated. Choice schools are allowed to have students who are zoned for the school as well as those who apply from other zones.
