Has anyone been to the fresh market? Is it a specialty food store (like a Whole Foods) or just your average supermarket chain?

Personally, I love Fresh Market. It is a little bit similar to Whole Foods, but with more emphasis on gourmet and goodies rather than organic, although they do have many organic/natural items. The meats are really superb, and they have bins and bins of bulk items, nuts, candies, etc. They have their own brand like Whole Foods, theirs is TFM (the Fresh Market) and they are VERY reasonably priced. This place can be pricey depending what you buy, but it is high quality and very nice, at least where I shop. Their bakery items are delicious and most are cheaper and better quality than Publix. They are definitely an upscale market. Give it a try and see what you think. It's not a place to do all your major shopping, but (at least for me) a lot of specialty items that are hard to find elsewhere.

Personally, I dont like it. I've only gone to the one in clearwater. With the name I expected to find a fair amount of organic items but there is more candy and processed foods than "fresh" items. As gypsy said, it does have a gourmet feel but I think it is EXTREMELY overpriced for basically mainstream items and fancy shelves. They do not carry any organic/grassfed meats nor any MSC certified fish. You are paying for atmosphere. Put it this way, the bulk candy section (and I mean of the artificially colored and flavored variety ala peeps and candy corn) takes up about half of the store. Sort of reminded me of a cracker barrel LOL! Anyway, I do understand why some people like it and I dont want to start an argument. I think it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for an alternative to whole foods, this is not it. If you want to stop by a nice "market" feel store to pick up something on your way to a dinner, might be okay. I went once, never went back.

I buy coffee from Fresh Market. There are lots of whole bean and blends to choose from. They also have a decent assortment of cheeses that are hard to find elsewhere.

How's the seafood there? I'm looking for a good place to get shellfish.
