Hi Guys,

We live in Boston and we are thinking to move in Tampa or Orlando. My wife and I are in our 30s. My employer will transfer me to Florida. Tampa and Orlando are the options that they gave us. The important thing for us is safety and nice environment to live and raise our kids. Which one do you suggest, Tampa or Orlando?

Thank you for your suggestions in advance.

Tampa. Do a thread search to find the reasons why. There are plenty.

Our only concern about Tampa is hurricanes. Which parts or towns of Tampa are safe from hurricanes?

Thanks

No part of Florida is "safe" from hurricanes.

Your chance of getting killed while driving is more than 1000 times greater than getting killed by a hurricane. So, why worry?

Tampa!

There is no point in living in FL if you're far from the beaches, and the gulf does have the best. I wouldn't move to Orlando ever again!

BTW The video footage shown on TV of hurricane damage does not include planned communities, only mobile homes! Which would fly if YOU blow at them heard enough!

You're safer in Tampa than you are in Boston. The last time a category 1 or greater hurricane hit Tampa was 1960. That same hurricane also hit New England, causing plenty of damage. Since then, there have been two Category 1 hurricanes and one Category 2 hurricane to hit New England, meanwhile zero have hit Tampa.

That said, the arrival of a hurricane is inevitable. Yet we have systems in place to alarm and evacuate problem areas four, five days in advance. If you don't want to get hurt by a hurricane, that choice is mostly up to you.

What about the crime rates? I know that Orlando has very high crime rate. Is it similar in Tampa? Which neighbors are safe closed to downtown? Thanks

Florida and safe from hurricanes....do not go together! Maybe you should try a state in the middle of the country...they are safe from hurricanes.

It depends on what you're looking for. Hyde Park (but not North Hyde Park) is one of Tampa's best neighborhoods with easy commute into downtown. I would also recommend Palma Ceia, Davis Island, and Harbor Island. These are nice, safe neighborhoods (and among Tampa's best) with a short drive into downtown. Carrolwood and Westchase are nice, but the drive is a bit longer.

Let the tourists have Orlando. I wouldn't want to live there at all.
