My husband and I are looking into moving to Tampa in the early spring. He will be working at 275 & NW Shore Blvd. I am not sure how many are familar with the area - we still need to go see the place. We are looking for a nice neighborhood with newer homes that is safe. However, rumor has it that traffic is really bad. Any tips on a nearby location where traffic isn't as bad?

Do you have any children? If you are a young couple without kids I would recommend that you consider South Tampa....it is very "hot" right now with younger couples. If you'd rather have the option of being "sandwiched" between Tampa and St. Pete, the area of Carillon near the Gandy Bridge is great as is Feather Sound or St. Pete (between 4th and 16th Streets.....south of Gandy to approx. 22nd Ave.)

Hi Susan,

We do not have children. I'm 25 and he is 28. However, we are kinda of "suburb-style new home and settle down" kinda people! Thank you SO much for your advice. We are both going to visit for a week in October and so, the more we know prior the better. Thanks!!

Tampa Palms is a good 35 to 45 minutes from Memorial Hwy. I actually live about 10 minutes from Tampa Palms and it take me about the same amount of time because I am right by the Interstate. The one thing about this area is that the homes are all newer. My wife and I live in Meadow Pointe, staight down Bruce B Downs, and the homes are all newer and we still have new construction going on out here.

What about Port Tampa? That is a great up and coming area my macdill AFB and its not quite as expensive as S Tampa (YET). The homes are mixed, new with old. Restored bungalows, and many different style houses. There are new communities that are being built there that are still affordable, others are a bit more pricey like westshore yacht club.

Picnic island is beautiful, right off the bay, view of downtown Tampa over the water. It's a really cute up and coming area!

Katrina

We were thinking also about renting a loft downtown for the first month, just to get our bearings and enjoy the city before we settle down in a suburb. We saw some nice lofts in channelside (?). Is this way far from the 275/memorial hwy as far as a long commute with traffic? Is this a nice/safe area?

Are there any hotels close to this area? We are looking to come out for a week - drive the traffic and really get a feel for the area.
