We call em Duplexes..
Double wides are restricted to certain areas or i should say certain areas have zoning restrictions on certain structures. like house trailers.

I would double check to see if Walmart would transfer his pay down to Florida (and get it writing). Why would Walmart pay him his NY salary when they can fill the job with someone else for $8 an hour? As far as a part-time job for you, good luck finding that quickly. It took me months to find a part-time job that only paid minimum wage. My hours were very limited (12 hours a week). If you are willing to work at gas stations (you won't be pumping gas, but more the retail sales inside), look into Racetrac Gas Stations. A friend's daughter worked in Orlando and got paid better there than flipping burgers. They are a decent company to work for.

Since you are homeschooling (Florida is big on that), you can have your middle and high schoolers take classes on Florida Virtual School Online High School | Online Middle School | Grades K-12 | Florida Virtual School. It is a very good way to take classes. My daughter took high school latin (I and II) while in 8th grade (needed a teacher recommendation for that). The middle school classes are limited, but the high school classes are plentiful.

As far as moving to Tampa, I wouldn't move to Tampa. Look more into further north like Hernando County, like several people have mentioned. The properties are cheaper. If you are looking into living in a trailer, that would be even cheaper. It's real pretty up there and more country like. You already live in the country up in NY. I don't know if you want to continue living like that.

I also agree on the exploratory trip down here. With so many kids, I would drive. We have driven up and back to NY many times. We try to stop in DC for a museum to let my kids stretch and do something outside the car. We also like to stop by Jekyll Island in GA so they can swim and walk around the beach, which is dog friendly. Come in the summer when the heat is on. That way, you can see if the heat is for you. I always hated the cold, now I hate the heat, though I am getting more use to it. If you do visit Hernando county, you should take the kids to Weeki Wachi park. They have a small waterpark (Buccaner Bay) in the springs. The water is freezing! It would be nice on a hot day.

Things that we did not have to pay in NJ, constant bug control, pool maintainance, larger electric bill year round, larger property, so larger yard to mow. For me, NJ had almost everything I needed within a mile or two or even walking distance, so my car gas bill was lower in NJ. Here I have to drive many more miles to do my usual things like grocery shopping.

I just looked up Hernado County on wikipedia, they say that Hernando County is home to the largest (truck-to-truck) Wal-Mart Distribution Center in the U.S., approximately 1,600,000 square feet .

Good post... However, the water temp at Weeki Wachee Spring is 72 year round. Did you know that the average water temp in Belmar NJ is 72 in August.

For ME, the water is freezing! I like my water to be 85 degrees! I never enjoyed going to the Jersey shore because the water never got warm enough, even in August.

The idea behind the exploratory trip was just meant for the decision maker of the house hold to look at some potential places to live and to check out the Walmarts, bringing the whole family for a vacation will get expensive and be too much of a distraction to the missions purpose, i also agree on coming in July or August so you get what Florida summer is all about, its definitely not for every one....
If hubby has a chauffeurs license his opportunities for expanding his income will be greatly improved.
My mom worked part time in the Hernando school board in the kitchens of various schools, might be worth a try

How about Lakeland? I was looking up rentals and it didnt seem to bad..not as high as some of the others. I was looking into rentals in hernado county and everything I found I googled map..well what we could afford i mapped. It all looks like dessert and tubleweeds..LOL. Is that what it is?

As for homes...we want to rent...just incase we want to relocate..we DONT want to live in a trailer but we are open to a BIGGer nice double wide...I wasnt sure if FL had them...like they do in NY. Some are as big or even bigger than my home.

I wouldnt bring the kids up...Most likely we would take a small trip there...Hubby and I together to see whats out there. I had more questions but dont remember now...

Question about bug control...What kind of bugs is this for? And would I still have this bill if I rented?

Palmetto Palmetto_Bug and miscellanous bugs found in Florida, termite control. I don't know if you have to pay for that if you rent. It may depend on your lease contract.

If you rent a place with a pool, you may be responsible for its upkeep. Cleaning it and putting in chemicals once a week. You have to go to the pool store (pinch-a-penny) and have your water tested (free). They will tell you if you need to add more this or that chemical. Chlorine is cheap, but some of the other chemicals can add up. To hire someone to do all that, I use to pay $80 a month. We decided to do it ourselves. It is a pain and now after several years, my kids hardly ever go in anymore.
