When I was living with my mother in a 55+ complex, I was paying rent to her, $400 a month. She liked the extra money and having somebody around. I liked her company too. Yes, we were breaking the rules. So she sold her unit and now I live with her and my brother in a nice 3 bedroom apartment. Once I finish college in a year or so we all (including my father) might move out west. I'm thinking Phoenix, AZ. It's real cheap and we could rent or buy a huge home where everybody would have their own bedroom. My dad could quit working too. Between his and my mother's SS$, my income, and my brother's income if he comes along, I think we could live comfortably together. You save money this way because you split the fixed costs among everybody (I'm an accounting major). And we all get along. We could be grilling food outside on those dry desert nights, sliding windows open to the outside, and everybody just feeling good. My parent's will have separate rooms so they won't get on each other's nerves. I just want everybody's core needs met and live stress free. My parent's helped me out in my times of need, and I could help them out in their late years. No way would I allow them in a nursing home.

Interesting - sounds like the Joads in Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. I think more families will have to do this as the economy is in the state it is.

Well- I think you are blessed NEW HORIZONS!!!! and BucFan this is what I have been saying all along, only the wealthy will be living in these communities, who have the money to travel to see kids, grands, have private Drs who visit and lend their children money when their businesses fail,,, the rest of us- will do what the old country used to do, find room for the old lady/man some where in the house and she can help peel potatoes, so watch over the kids and help us remember what FAMILY is all about. Me I want family around the day I fall down and can't get up.
