Hi! I am relocating to Tampa end of April and was wondering if anybody could tell me, out of Suburban Extended Stay (near airport), In Town Suites (E. Adamo Dr.) or Value Place (Lakeland), which would be the safest choice? Obviously, anyone staying at a hotel with an out-of-state tag, kind of feels vulnerable. If anyone knows of a decent motel, even, in a safe area for $40/night or less, I would appreciate that info also. I am not paranoid, but nobody wants to become a victim of crime, and a safe place to live while I'm looking for work & a new apt would make my new start much more enjoyable! Thanks!

The area near the Airport is perfectly safe, as is E. Adamo Dr (County Jail around the corner, so there's plenty of Patrol). I've never really felt unsafe anywhere in the Tampa area. As for Lakeland, I don't live there, I couldn't tell you the bad parts of town. I would say though, that it'd be a lot easier commute and job search wise to stay in the city.

My experience in other cities is that extended stay hotels seem to attract scummy people. I haven't figured out why.

I wouldn't stay in Lakeland if you are looking for work/apt in Tampa. Nothing wrong with Lakeland but why put yourself so far away from Tampa.

I have a friend who stayed at the Homestead Extended Stay a few years ago and she spoke highly of the place. Only bad thing would be that you are in the flight pattern.

Go to biddingfortravel.com or betterbidding.com, look at the 2* and 3* properties in each region of Tampa to confirm that the list of locations is acceptable, and then make an aggressive Priceline bid for a several week stay. An "extended stay" kind of property that was asking $99 a night accepted a bid of $35/nt from me for a recent week-long stay.

Any savings from staying in Lakeland will be eaten up by gas, time and aggravation of sitting in traffic.

I do not think that $35-40 is out of the question to snag a good hotel in Tampa, not a fly-by-night motel/dump.

Here are the hotels that participate in Priceline name-your-own-price:

I'd pick the one near the airport. It's a safe area, just don't leave any valuables visible in your car. About the worst thing you have to worry about is getting your car broken into, however that's still pretty much a rarity.
