Hello,
Im considering moving to Tampa with my husband and our 2 sons. I work from home, but my husband will need to find a job. He last worked as an oil tech here for a local oil change spot. We are also an interracial couple.

My questions are...
1. Is is hard to find a job?

2. Are the communities pretty interracially mingled? I come from a place that still has quite a bit of racism and ignorance...

3. How are the elementary schools?

Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

Welcome to the forum
\] Jobs are tough right now in Florida and although you may think a minimum wage job at a Jiffy Lube might be a gimme it aint so as your hubby will have a lot of competition to get any minimum wage job in Fla.
Are the communities pretty interracially mingled? Not so much i'd say whatever you are experiencing where you are now is going to be basically the same in Fla.
Elementary schools can be good or bad depending on where you live but a lot has to do with the educational motivation of the child.
As for moving to Fla?. i certainly wouldnt put my future in the comments made on a forum, you need to get down to Florida and see for yourself what its going to be like to live there.

Consensus seems to be that you should not move to FL without a job. The job market is volatile; otherwise I would be there instead of freezing in NYC.

I'm interracial and grew up in Tampa and it was never a problem. Schools will depend on the affluence of the neighborhood; the better the neighborhood, the better schools.

All the best.

Also when people say they work from home they should keep in mind if I get laid off from my job, what jobs are there in my field in the new place.

Am I moving to an area where I can find another job if needed in my field and in the same pay range.

This economy is still very shaky, so the OP needs to look at what else can I do in Tampa and not just assume her work from home job will always be there. Especially when the husband wouldn't be coming with a job.

Always have a Plan B.

I do medical transcription so I will always have a job, not worried about that at all... But thanks.

I don't think you'd raise any eyebrows at all as an interracial couple. I wouldn't even worry about that.

As far as the job, do you make enough that you could support the family if your husband couldn't find a job right away? Jobs can be difficult to find (just as they are pretty much anywhere right now). Looking for employment before moving is a good option, although that can be difficult too.

There are some absolutely fabulous schools here; and some really terrible ones. It all depends on where you are and whether or not you are in a particular program.
