Either Riverview or Brandon to MacDill is $3.00 one way or $2.50 one way with a Sun Pass.

THANK YOU!

Is it that much more time consuming to avoid the toll?
And how does the Sun pass work?

You buy a SunPass at a local store, such as Eckerd's, then register it online at Welcome to SunPass.com.

You link the transceiver with a bank account or credit card and choose the amount that it refreshes at.

After that, just drive through the SunPass lane or enjoy the elevated roadway into or out of downtown, depending on the time of day.

Take note - the express lanes only go to the downtown area, not to MacDill. You would probably end up driving on the surface lanes to get to the exit for MacDill, otherwise you would end up driving through downtown to get there after getting off the Crosstown.

Also - the SunPass is good on all the other tollways in Florida, in case you're driving somewhere else in the state. For the Tampa area, you're looking at the Crosstown or Veteran's Expressways.

The Crosstown ends at Gandy & Dale Mabry, just north of the Dale Mabry gates, I believe. And it's elevated at that point. Seems like the gate is just a few miles from there.

From Brandon/Riverview to MacDill, I would only take the Selmon Crosstown, otherwise you would be on local roads with lights and traffic, and probably take you about 20-25 minutes longer or more.

If you take the second exit for downtown Tampa, you avoid the last toll and get to enjoy the scenic Bayshore Blvd. for your last leg.

My family uses the Sun Pass all the time - it takes you pretty much all the way to McDill (Dale Mabry) - probably 3-4 miles to the front gate. The Bayshore drive is nice, but you have to deal with traffic lights. Not sure whether the back gate/side gate of McDill is any quicker to get through.

I'd definitely take the Crosstown and pay the money. Alternate routes takes longer, too much traffic to deal with, higher chance for accidents, etc.

How much does the sunpass device cost? We have 3 cars and all 3 will need the device.

If I remember correctly, the last one I bought was about $50. It cost $25 for the device and $25 to put on your account initially to start paying for tolls. It has been a few years, so someone correct me if I am wrong.
