I also did some checking and I could find nothing stating the new standard being 18-20%, it is still 15-20%.

I've tipped 20% for good service for the last 20 years. Things that will make me tip poorly are: Rude servers, empty drink glass, or rushed service.

I've never liked the argument that waiters "only" makes such-and-such an hour. Even in chain restaurants like Red Lobster they can make 10-15/hour in tips consistently. High end places like Capital Grille or Ruth's Chris net 30-35/hour. Of course waiters rarely work more than 25-30 hours a week on average, so you have to take that into consideration. At the same time, spare me on the hourly wage argument, your tips more than make up for it.

Thanks, but I'm not in the burbs. I have been in the restaurant biz for over 20 years in many cities in the USA, I do not need to ask my manager for service tips, but thanks for the advice...I am simply comparing tips from this area to the rest of America and trust me, it's lacking.

Thank you!

& yeah, what does this have to do with Tampa?

And why is it not good now?

Given the price of eating out, I think 10% is good. For a thirty dollar meal (two people), that is three dollars. Add that to your hourly wage, with just two tables with a three dollar tip each, that already puts you well above minimum wage. How much do you want for unskilled labor? And if the place is that slow, or you get assigned bad tables, then you should find another place, it is not my job to supplement a bad business plan.

"If you have a great time and want to show it leave 20%. I am truly shocked at the volume of 15% tippers in the area who will say to their server "you were great, thank you so much" then leave 15%. Please spread the word."

What, I am suppose to give more now because you are doing your job? You doing your job is what brings back customers, thus management is suppose to reward you a performance bonus, not the customers. Again, my job is not to supplement a bad business plan nor bad management. If you do not do your job, I do not come back, the business does not get my business, word gets out, business slows down, business is out of business, you are looking for another job.

I could just imagine asking for more money from my customers in my current job "hey, since I did such a great job at this financial audit, can you please give me more money?" No, my services keeps customers, and brings more customers to the company, thus I get paid by my company in salary and bonuses.

It is YOUR job! don't like it, find other field....I am completely against tipping when someone actually HAS a salary!!!
That is your job as a parent and does not deserve a tip.
I did all the above you mention, except stay at home since they were in school, and I worked a full time job.
