I dearly want to relocate to the Tampa Bay area and I am seeking the opinions of others who have done so and who live in the area. Advice, tips, surprises encountered, others experiences, etc... I have provided some information below.

Finding work in Tamp while living in in Maryland seems difficult, any advice in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Where is your employment and the hours you will be working.
Still looking for an opportunity in the area. I work in the IT field. Currently a network administrator; however, my skill set is broad and I can function in roles such as help desk technician, desktop support, systems administration, information security officer, etc... I am applying for work in the area and I am hopeful that I will find something. If anyone personally knows the state of the IT sector in Tampa, any information is appreciated.

What is your budget for housing. Do you want to rent or buy?
I am looking for a salary in the area of 65k annually. I would like to not go over $1000 per month for housing, $750 would be better. Utilities are a concern, any information on what utilities run on a modest home would be nice.

Are schools a concern?
I have a son that would be in elementary school, so yes they are a concern

What is an acceptable commute time?
30 minutes

What else is important to you?
[LEFT]I want to live in Tampa or the surrounding area. I am not seeking riches; I simply want to live comfortably in an area that I believe I would truly enjoy. I have wanted to relocate to Florida for sometime now.

Good news and bad news. There are a handful of very smart and knowledgeable IT professionals (crazy nip, user 8) on this forum who may be able to offer you specific advice.

Bad news is that there aren't many opportunities. Try taking a look here for a quick discussion on IT opportunities. //www.city-data.com/forum/tampa...ies-tampa.html

Can I ask why you are motivated to move specifically to Tampa? I am also a network admin and thought about moving to Tampa a few months ago. I received advice on this forum and decided to hold off. I hope it works out for you.

The main factors for Tampa was cost of living and that it is a decent sized metro area. Geographically I would like to live in a more southern part of Florida, such as the Homestead area, but opportunities there are even less abundant from what I have seen. I am not set on remaining in a network administration position either. I enjoy it, and I am skilled at it, but I could switch roles in a minute if necessary. I have a broad skill set and range of experience and could function in any IT role from net admin on down to a help desk tech. I'd even switch do a different industry if it allowed for me to relocate. My main requirements are steady income that allows me to support my family and live modestly yet comfortably. I am happy with the simple life.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I hope you are able to find it down here. If the salaries in FL could match those in the Northeast, I would have moved south yesterday.

I look at it like this. I could go to the Baltimore/DC area, maybe N. Virginia, and better than double my salary; or, I could go South to the temperate sub-tropical climate I desire and continue to live on a less than industry standard salary. I honestly believe that the latter would make me truly happy, while the other would probably leave me in a big house and miserable with myself. I am at a point where if I play my cards right, I could secure a fairly decent retirement fund and continue to live comfortably on a salary near what I make now.

Well I'm glad to put a smile on your face. In all honesty I would prefer the Homestead area, into the Keys, but really, is there any work there?

OptimusPrime69, Lot of people moving to the Tampa area are they all deserving of your somewhat snarky attitude?

As to the OP's plight? as said theres a lot of people moving to Tampa, jobs arent overly abundant, even though its tough to secure work from afar you should get a good idea of where potential jobs might be.
