Tampa --

A large job fair is taking place to fill positions at Tampa's Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino today.

The casino is looking to fill 400 positions.

The job fair runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Florida State Fairgrounds. Applicants must apply online beforehand.

Officials are looking to fill a variety of positions and pending a background check, people could be hired on the spot.

The casino needs more employees as part of its $75 million expansion project. The first phase of the project is slated to be done in June.

"Well they're from all over the casino but mainly we're doing a lot of hirings in the food and beverage department,'' said Gina Morales, a spokesperson with the casino. "(We also need) cocktail servers, cooks, people like chefs and people with experience (and) non-experience entry-level slot attendant players club representatives, and people really from all over the casino."

Huge job fair today for Hard Rock Casino

I heard on the radio yesterday that they received over 10,000 applications to fill those 400 jobs.

That just goes to show you how bad the job market really is around here.

Very alarming number. Wow. So many respond, even to "dead-end" jobs.

While there is truth to this, for some and the unfortunate who have been laid off or have not been able to gain employment elsewhere, the casino is the next best thing they have. Especially in an areas like Pinellas County / Florida, where the economy is not so great and the rate being as high as it is for unemployment in the country. It helps that bit for the hard working Americans who need a little to get by and get going.

I would rather have people work a job in the service/entertainment industry than sit at home and collect UE. But that's just me.

I don't know about the comp and can't sue part as Crazy usually exaggerates. Those who works on table games actually make pretty good money, way more than what a department store pays them. So, I don't consider it a dead-end job per se.

When casinos start to hire, it is a good sign as their business is based on other people ability to spend money. Overall, I consider it a very good sign for the region

Nothing wrong with working at a Casino. It may lead to being a card dealer in Las Vegas, or on a cruise ship. Maybe someone wants to eventually work on Cruise ships and this is their way in. Nothing wrong with working in the Service Industry. Many people who work in the Service Industry enjoy it. Everything is not about money.

Just because someone does not have the skills or even the want to climb up the corporate ladder does not mean it is a dead end job. Heck, some people may view being a mechanic as a dead end job. When in fact it is a great trade to learn and has tons of opportunities.

If everyone had the same goals and like the same things the world would be even more competitive and boring.

I thank and appreciate those who take on positions that make them happy and enjoy what they do.
