I have been looking everywhere, and for quite some time for a place for my boyfriend and I to move to with our almost eight week old rottweiler/doberman puppy, Ares. We don't have him quite yet but we will be getting him very soon and be moving out of my mother's home quite soon after that. I would like to know if anyone has any ideas for apartments around USF or Dale Mabry that will accept a rottweiler. I don't mind paying a pet fee, and I am trying to get him insured by an insurance company just in case. (My mother and I have had rottweilers before and know the drill) If you can help thank you so much and if you have something to say about my dog and choice in breed please leave don't post about it. I just need some extra help, thank you in advanced!

Unfortunately I do not know of any rentals in the USF area so I wish you luck. If you lived in Riverview I could point you in the right direction possibly. The condo/townhouse subdivision I live in will take big dogs. Their limit is three and they do have to be under 70 lbs each but honestly I have seen a guy with a bull mastiff walking around here and I know that dog weighs a lot more than 70 lbs!

Good luck to you.

Hey Stephybear, congrats on your new puppy! You're in a very good position to live where you'd like given the dogs age, so long as you spend a little time (and money) getting him properly trained. See if you can find a local company who will train Ares as a service animal. Do so, and get the resulting papers and badge, and by law a landlord cannot restrict your dog because of its breed. As a service animal, however, the insurance liability will fall on you and not the landlord.

The doberman influence in your dog makes it one of the smartest, most trainable dogs you could ask for. Some studies place the doberman above even the border collie in terms of intelligence. The breed got a bad rap for its portrayal in the media, but it's not aggressive by nature. It's less aggressive than the dachshund, for example. The dog was bred to be territorial, so it is a great watchdog. Nearly all reports of bites from a doberman result from someone being on the owner's property without their consent and introduction. So when you're away from home, always put the dog in a crate in case maintenance needs to stop by for an impromptu repair. A doberman will try to protect your house from a stranger, but it won't leave your property to go after someone like an aggressive breed.

(last, and excuse me for a bit of politics-- I would advise against docking the tail and cropping the ears. those are two of the most expressive features on a doberman or a mix, as they communicate so much with a wag and the shifting of the ears. you won't know what you're missing if you crop and dock...)

She is saying where she lives in Riverview, they will take big dogs. Why not PM her and see?

Default Not many options, but there are some..

I have a Rotty as well and live in the Tampa area. Check out Camden properties at camdenliving.com. I rented from them in the USF area (off of bruce b. downs blvd and amberly dr.) and had a great experience. You have to pay a $400 pet fee, but no pet rent, and they'll accept you and your Rotty no problem; you may even find yourself making friends with the other Rott owner's around the property..I know I did with quite a few people, and it seems no other apartment complexes in the area will budge on their breed restriction policies. If that doesn't work out for you, hop on craigslist and try to find a house for rent. Usually if you deal with an individual landlord versus a big apartment complex, they tend to be a bit more flexible. Best of luck!
