Lot of homes around Tampa in the historic areas seem to have painted brick pillars. I am guessing because it covers any damage but I prefer the look of natural. Am I alone? Is it a huge hassle and cost to have the paint stripped and possible fixed if it crumbles??

I also like the natural look. I would never paint them.

I dont know about stripping the paint off, brick is masonry and soaks up paint, so I dont think you could get it back.

Why did people do it? Because it was a trendy thing to do at one point but looks trashy now.

Like people putting carpet over nice wood and terazzo floors.

I've seen brick cleaned/stripped with LIGHT media blasting-they use baking soda as the media. There's also a lot of strippers from hell out there.

Stripping paint from brick

Scroll to the bottom of the page for info on media blasting.

I think white brick looks really good it's all over Raleigh but they do it on huge historic tudors. I doubt it would look good on Florida ranch homes...
