St. Pete Area Question (Tampa, Country Club: for sale, renting, condos)

I'm looking to possibly move to downtown St. Pete area. There are some interesting listings in the area around 15th-17th Ave S, just north of Bartlett Park. But from reading the forums, many people say to stay away from south of downtown, which scares me some. Is this area south far enough to no longer qualify for that, or would it still be considered bad? (I read some people lauding the Lassing Park area, which is directly east. That's why I ask.)

I haven't gotten to look at the homes in person yet. Should hopefully be doing that later this week.

Also, anyone know anything about the Feather Sound area? There are a lot of condos for sale in my range there.

Go to Feather Sound...South St. Pete is filthy and crime ridden.... there is NO comparison. Feather Sound is a nice, safe area. It is also convenient to a lot of things.

you can search by city or zip. Look up those zips in S. St. Pete and see what I mean.

33701 does not show up in Crime Tracker at all, which is the entire downtown area. (At least, when it actually decides to do something other than "Loading...")

Do you have a firewall up? It doesn't work for me when I have mine up. Try that...if not try looking up Pinellas County and then zoom into S. St. Pete.

When I first moved to Saint Petersburg people told me not to even look south of Central Ave. I am so glad I ignored them. There are WONDERFUL neighborhoods in South St Pete. There is Maximo (where I eventually moved to) & Broadwater. Pink Streets & Pinellas Point. I currently live in Lakewood Estates and love it. Huge lots, great neighbors and I am surrounded by the Saint Pete Country Club and the Boyd Hill Nature park. I can assure you not all areas in South Saint Pete are crime ridden.

Florida Derby - I was sure that was the case. I've been looking in various areas for a few months now, and one of the things I've realized is that it only takes a couple blocks to transition from bad to good. Right now I'm renting in Tampa, by Kennedy and MacDill. The area I'm in is fine, but if I go a block north of Kennedy, you better believe I've got my windows rolled up.

That's why I listed a particular area. I really want to know details about that area, not a generalized statement about a swath of city encompassing an entire cardinal direction. Especially since I know that far enough south is one of the highest household income areas in Pinellas county.

I totally agree. Not all areas in South St. Pete are bad at all. Usually those are ignorant and possibly racist people saying things like that mostly because the area is predominately black. There are some rough areas, but others are not so bad. Just do your homework and you will be fine. I have been through some really rough areas of S. St. Pete many times and I have never had a problem. People need to remember that not all but MOST crimes are domestic crimes and are not random acts.

If you're already in the area and can check out places first hand, then S St Pete would be ok, as there are good spots. But if you're out of town and having to find housing remotely, Feather Sound would be your better bet to buy in sight unseen.
