Hello everyone,

I tried searching for relevant threads but I couldn't find any. I'm moving to Tampa for employment in July.*

-Work will be just off of 75 and MLK with traditional 9-5 hours.

-I just recently graduated from college and would like to live in a friendly and safe area with young people.

-I rock climb a lot and would like to be close to Vertical Ventures climbing gym near Tampa International Airport (Vertical Ventures Rock Climbing, 5402 Pioneer Park Blvd)

-Acceptable commute time would be less than 20 minutes with traffic.

I think Temple Terrace or Brandon might be a good fit. I'm looking to rent an apartment (1-2 bedroom) for $700 rent. Is this a good budget?

Thank you for any and all help!

I strongly recommend S. Tampa if you want a great quality of life as a young adult but your budget may prevent you from finding a decent place. Nonetheless, given your options, I would recommend Temple Terrace over Brandon although I am not too familiar with housing options in Temple Terrace. Good luck!

Is $700 a reasonable budget for a 1 bedroom in Temple Terrace? If I were to increase the budget, would South Tampa commute be too far? Do you have any specific apartment communities in mind?

Thank you!

I don't think that the commute is too far. I have a few friends that do the drive from S. Tampa to the MLK/I-75 area and I haven't heard them complain about it too much. But I do understand the preference of a reduced commute. For apartments in S. Tampa- the best thing to do is drive around and keep an eye on Craigslist. Apartments are quick to be taken because of the high demand in the area so many landlords don't even bother posting on Craigslist; they'll just stick a sign in front and wait. On my way to the gym this morning though, I saw a few "for rent" signs in good neighborhoods for 1bedrooms and studios that will be manageable with your budget. I have heard good things about Temple Terrace if you feel that the commute will be a bit undesirable though.

Here's a snapshot of the properties I'm interested in. Are there any particular areas that I should be concerned about or eliminate?

That whole area is pretty much crack town!

That University Square where that "mall" is (was? is it still there?) is awful....Take a trip and see for yourself.

However, ON Bearss Ave you might find a better apartment complex, but you have to stay closer to Dale Mabry rather than Florida Ave etc. OR Go up on Bruce B Downs and there you might find a better suited place.

But I would up the budget and go to South Tampa seriously.

Ouch! Thanks for the information! I'll have to start over but that's much better than being surprised, I suppose. Is there a reason you guys don't recommend Brandon?

Yeah! Research, and visit.

Brandon is too far, the traffic will drive you nuts.
