Questions remain for some in TPD shooting of youth

TAMPA --
While Tampa Police officials continue to investigate the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old suspect by two officers, some neighborhood witnesses are saying the teen did nothing wrong.

According to Tampa Police spokesperson Laura McElroy, the shooting occurred in the Central Court Apartments in the 2500 block of Central Avenue around 7:20 p.m.

Officers said Javon Neal was shot while holding a loaded shotgun and refusing to obey officers' commands to drop the weapon.

Authorities said Neal ran from them through the apartment complex and up a staircase. Officers said when he got to the third floor, he turned towards them while holding the weapon.

Officers reportedly ordered Neal to drop the weapon, he allegedly didn't comply and two officers shot Neal. He later died at St. Joseph's Hospital.

However, witnesses reported a different sequence of events.

Family members calling shooting unjustified

Residents protested on the sidewalk at the Central Court Apartments Monday, comparing Neal’s death to that of Trayvon Martin. A small memorial also formed at the bottom of the staircase where Neal was shot.

Really? Are we getting Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Black Panthers now over here for racism...?

And will we get the innocent description of good and nice 16 year old guy who clearly has a grill in his mouth and probably is an AP honor student and the police just had to wait and do nothing and get themselves killed...

Sorry i'm so sick of hearing officers getting killed and these young innocent guys...if that was the case then police would be in my neighborhood as well and our hard working students would be dealing with the same issue.

I don't want our officers getting shot in the line of duty either, but given that minorities rarely get a fair shake in our legal system I think the support from their community is warranted. Whose story is true, the police officers or the community witnesses? That's up to a jury to decide-- and not any of our prejudices about a recently-deceased kid's dental work.

If the police officers are telling the truth and the witnesses didn't properly perceive the situation or weren't being honest, it cuts to a deeper issue. How the hell did a 16-year-old kid get his hands on a pistol-grip shotgun?

It seems to be very common for 16 year olds and younger to have access to firearms these days. Most of the guns they aquire were probably stolen from a legal gun owner.

We need gun control rules. This is ridiculous, we look like savage people with these loose laws.
Its quite embarrassing that we allow people to kill others for NO reason; in peace times might I add.

Oh puleeez!!!!

Everytime one of these hoodlums get killed for taking on the cops, we have the uhuru's and others of their ilk crawling out from under their rocks crying 'racism'.

Do you honestly think these cops went there wanting to shoot somebody? seriously? are you that clueless about the police?

This kid and his early demise are a direct result of pisspoor parenting. When the state finally has to deal with him for being an outlaw, everybody wants to jump up and say, 'how could this happen'? 'the cops must be racist'. 'it's the white man's fault'.

I get sooooooo sick of having people second geuss the cops everytime one of them tries to defend themselves from yet another black, young, would be copkiller. If this kid was white, not a word would have been mentioned by anybody, which just goes to show that in the end, it's always about race. always.

It goes both ways, sometimes people get reaaaaally sick and side with the police because the victim is black and they think they must be playing the color card

People need to concentrate on the facts and stop all this color BS. Who cares about his teeth or if he was going to be a parent, that's irrelevant to the killing. Some of you are stereotyping now. Teeth and being a young parent desn't make you a killer, pointing a gun does

It is not uncommon for people of all races to blame the police in these kind of incidents. Let them investigate. If he indeed had a gun it should not be that hard to prove.
