How is the looming federal budget cut going to effect federal job cuts at McDill Airforce Base?

Generally I feel wow it sucks and i hope they reach a deal, but there's a small part of my mind that secretly hopes my husband's job is removed so we can go elsewhere in the US --like back HOME.

What kind of work does he do? Is he a federal employee?

If he lose his job, he could be jobless.

How long have you been in Tampa? What do you dislike about Tampa?

All military are federal employees. If he loses his job, he's not jobless, the military will send him elsewhere.

I dislike generally everything about tampa, we are "living" here, but to say we enjoy it would be a far cry.

How long have you been there? How is the commute from Brandon to McDill during traffic hours?

We have been here 2 years (got 2 left). I dont drive to macdill but maybe once or twice a year (my hubby is military, not me), but i believe via crosstown it takes him about 30-40 minutes. But, depends what part of brandon you're in too, we are closer to valrico, so it takes him 10-15 mins just to get TO the cross town.

I just posted this in another thread. MacDill isn't going anywhere. They could lose some jobs is about it. When they cut jobs it ultimately means cutting people. That is an entire process that would make you nautious if I even tried to explain it.

Many other bases have already been identified to cut, but our Politicians won't cut anything from their district (but will try to do it for others).

When I came in the Navy we had 1800 people doing the job I did. Not a whole lot in the scheme of things. Technology, base closures, budget cuts, etc... and 26 years later when I retired we were down to 960. Almost 50% of the jobs went away. I was never told I would be going home. They just promote less, retire more early, take in fewer people, etc...

I dont know if you mistook what i was trying to say, I'm not saying my husband has been told he would go home.. its a hope. We have Nebraska as our #1 base on our list, so they typically send people there that WANT to go there since they struggle to fill that base with people anyway.

Month's ago it was already mentioned that lots of jobs will be cut...

We need a good change not the one we have received for the last 3.5 yrs...or more people will walk away from homes, due to job losses.

We hear on a daily base that people are moving out of State due to job loss.

In the last week 3 short sale listings and a tenant breaking their lease all due to job losses...the bad news keeps coming!

They had a big RIF back in 1990-92 at MacDill. Where we lived there were a lot of military employees who had just bought a new house in that nabe. There were many who were reassigned and left MacDill. Those that did not retire just moved out and left the new house to go into forecloser without a second thought.

That of course set up the whole area to be a renter's paradise which brought the whole neighborhood down.
