I recently acquired a late 70's Technics component stereo system. The previous owners took all the components in for servicing a couple of years back. However, now that I hooked the system up at my house I am hearing some low frequency garble when I play back from the turntable or the cassette deck.
I am looking for an electronics shop that will take a look at it and hopefully fix it. Does anyone know of any reputable shops in the St. Pete/Clearwater area?
Thanks!

Try Plaza Electronics on Ulmerton. Had my NAD preamp fixed by them this summer. Fixed it right and for a very reasonable price.

I went by last weekend - unfortunately they were closed. I took a look at their pricing and saw that they usually quote around $90 for stereo repair. It sounded a bit steep but I should just suck it up.
Thanks for the response!

I don't think it's high, especially considering it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to find anyone to work on them. Good luck and let me know how it goes, I myself own a lot of vintage equipment. Used to have a guy down here near me (in Sarasota) who could work on anything, but unfortunately he died last year.

As a vintage stereo owner, I can assure you that repairs are not usually cheap, and as a result, a lot of people will get an estimate and decide it's not worth it to repair a piece of equipment.

That being the case, if only a small percentage of your estimates return as actual repairs, your "bench fee" is going to be higher.

That's not to mention that troubleshooting analog equipment takes a great deal of skill and expensive test equipment. These folks are artisans who have abilities that are tough to find nowadays.

I can't speak for the company being mentioned, but I suspect that the bench fee is applied to any repairs. That is pretty typical for most places like this.
