I'm interested in relocating from Long Island New York. My biggest concern is being able to survive on a Florida Teacher's salary while trying to afford a mortgage of atleast 1,800 a month. Also, the quality of education my elementary school child will get. In addition, to the area I would like to live in. Any helpful responses I would appreciate it. So far I have Wesley Chapel to consider. I would like to work and live in the same area since I'm not up for a commute longer than 20 minutes from home.

Default Teacher' Pay

How does 35,000$ sound to you. Most school districts in LI are better. Before you buy check what your home owners insurance will be. Home prices in Wesley Chapel are in free fall so be careful.

Seriously, I have lived 10 minutes from Wesley Chapel for 25 years and I have watched it grow tremendously. Some who live there are glad to have new schools, new shopping without driving, but some who have lived there since before all of this are upset. It used to be the country, orange groves, cattle ranchers, etc they do not like all of the people or traffic. The county has yet to catch up with the road situation on Hwy 54 last sunday we sat for 25 minutes in stop and go traffic from I-75 to 54 & 56 area. Yes the crime is low for now however the city seems to keep moving out this way and the crime rate for Land O Lakes and wesley chapel has doubled!!! Land O Lakes is now famous for nudist communities-we have 5! Go to Wal-mart and you will see a few people who think that they can barely dress to go to get their groceries! I myself do not want to see that!! Tampa and the surrounding areas have definitely changed for the worse. I have lived here 25 years and now that I am grown and have 3 children we are moving out of the state to a more moral state!!!

That is not doable. Even if your mortgage payment was only 800 a month, you will be really struggling... the taxes and insurance will add a few hundred more a month on to your mortgage and what teachers make here, sheeeesh!!... what you're considering is a disaster looking for a place to happen. Sorry to be so blunt, but the math doesn't work. You'd be better off looking in another state that's more affordable or staying where you are. It's very difficult for teachers here.

That just does not compute. Why do you need a mortage of AT LEAST $1800 a month? You need to live within your means.

There are so many nice house for sale and even a lot of short sales so it is very good to buy a home in Florida right now. Because of the fast growing area that Wesley Chapel is, they need a lot of good teachers. So plenty of work and affordable houses even for rent.

Yes it's true there all lots of nice houses for sale here... because people can't afford them lol! Perchance any of those are < $100k?

For ~$35,000 income (typical teacher pay) the monthly payment can't be much over $800 including taxes and insurance in order to be within a reasonable and realistic financial situation. How much was that rent?

Well, a nice manufactured home in a gated community about 3 miles East of Wesley Chapel can be bought for about 80k.

Well, my 2 cents worth...I am a Florida native and we CANNOT wait to get out of here. The taxes are ridiculous, the house insurance is riduculous, the lack of education, culture, good heart people...all of the above. We are headed to Mass. We do not have children, but let me tell you, if we did, this is the LAST place I would raise them. Education is not a priority! They are too busy making sure the casinos are running good to worry about schools. I know I come off as a negative...I will never get a job with the florida board of tourism, but the positive that people are giving you, for the most part, is superficial. The negatives may be hard core and over the edge, tone them down just a tad and you have the truth. If you must come south...go to Georgia...it is basically the same as here, but prettier, and much cheaper in taxes...much!!!! Good luck..we are Mass bound asap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
