Lou Holtz had a base salary of $500k. The link below shows millions in salaries coming out of state coffers for USF football, but none show up for UF football. It's possible that they are being reimbursed to USF, but to just assume these things is to be entirely too trusting of government.

Salaries in Florida's Universities: Database
The University Athletic Association pays coaches salaries for UF. It's separate from UF and is not funded with state money. I'm guessing those very high athletic fees USF has go towards the salaries.

Besides, you can't look at a college coach versus a professor in terms of salaries. There are thousands of people who can do what college professors do...many of thousands. Not true for a successful football coach- they are rare. When you are rare, you are in low supply and high demand...and you know what economics tell us, right?

Also, the amount of money that coaches makes for the athletic program is ridiculous. Where are you going to find 80,000 people to attend a final calculus exam?

Last note: you need to know that athletic departments actually donate TO the school in multiple forms in many universities. The opposite of what you are trying to construe.
Can the team exist without the university? If so, then why is it part of the university, and not an independent organization?

If you charge the students for millions of dollars in coach salaries, then that is truly twisted.. especially, if the athletic program markets itself as being a self-sustaining entity. You're fleecing the students whether they want to participate in athletics, or not.

People believe what they want to believe, though..

You should be paying less at USF as it's a lesser school. The problem in FL is that all tuition is very low compared to national standards.

I'm failing to see the "problem".

Do you have any stats to back that up ? Looking at the UT-Austin website and comparing it to the UF website, it looks like UF is just a tad more expensive, by about like $2,000. I'm just curious to see if you have any info that ranks states based on college costs..

The problem is universities in Florida are competing nationally on many levels with other schools that are bringing in more money in tuition.

Sure. You will find many FL universities on this list. Many much higher on the list due to cost as they are not great academic schools.

...and schools in FL are among some of the best in the nation - academically and athletically. So I say again...I fail to see the problem.
