I like Safety Harbor too, but for what you specified work wise it is a bit north with just Courtney Campbell to go over the bay....in the event of a storm, I'd like to have more than one bridge as an option if I had to evacuate.

If u are going to be in Pinellas Park more check out Old North East in St Pete, I think you may like it.

Thank you Nalexand. Glad to help.

So far, it sounds like there's some consensus about two places in particular: Safety Harbor and Carrollwood. When we buy we will be looking for a 4 bedroom 3 bathroom, one level (preferred), with an enclosed in-ground pool, two car garage, and a separate space that can be used as an art studio for my wife. Or a three car garage would serve the same purpose. Just has to accomodate a kiln that needs venting to the outside.
I am thinking your best bet will be Carrollwood/Northdale; based on commute and getting bang for your buck based on your needs. Safety Harbor is charming but small; and as floridagirl said there will not be a lot of housing inventory, so you may not be able to find what you want there. Also, it would be a heckuva commute always having to go over the Causeway, especially in bad weather. I would not want to do it. But definitely check the areas out for yourself. We can advise all day, but in the end you will have to make the decision.

I agree with algia, that if you find you will be in Pinellas Park more often, you should look into the Old NE area of St. Pete - I LOVE that neighborhood!

Good luck!

Old North East becoming v expensive again, schools not the best if you are going public.
If you are going to be more in P Park then look at Seminole and unincorporated Largo. Quickish access to Hills Co over Gandy or HowFrank bridges. via Park. Ulmerton and 118th access roads. Housing under 300K for an older but updated home with pool in good school area close to beaches out of flood zones and very safe area. Access to beaches great when you have younger ones and the schools/sports/arts are all good. Hope that helps. Renting around $1600 for a 3/2/2 with/without pool in a good home that is in good condition.

Just keep in mind that both Seminole & Largo will be a horribly long commute the other way!
