If you are in Pinellas go to a tackle shop like Mastrys (St. Pete) or Dogfish (Seminole). Ask them to help set you up.

If you are land-bound, by all means invest in some water shoes/ waders. The wade fishing on the flats is better than fishing off the piers. Trout, reds, snook, pompano- all can be had in areas that are too shallow for many boats, and off the beaten path.

Fresh water fishing in Pinellas? with so much salt water potential in the area? the only freshwater i can think of is perhaps lake Seminole, however i've never tried it..
Bait of choice in salt water would be live shrimp..

how do you know where you can and can't fish in that area? are there ordinances or signs?

Usually you can fish anywhere you can easily get a line in the water assuming its not some ones private back yard., if there are restrictions to any given area you can bet they'll be prominently noted with signage .and usually fenced off. If i'm down by the pier i usually pay the $3 and park in the parking lot just before you get up on the pier proper and fish off the seawall .Looks like this and yes that is the ill fated Bounty moored to the pier http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g1...1/DSCF1218.jpg
One of my favorite fishing areas was the causeway leading out to the Skyway Bridge but then they turned the road into an interstate and fenced off all the good fishing areas and put a ton of no fishing signs up.
These days my usual fishing areas when i'm down for a visit is Ft Desoto.
In this map you can see the two fishing piers and at the north end the Arrows picnic/fishing area .

Jambo-couldn't rep you - thanks for taking the time to post/respond. I'm a complete and absolute novice and have taken a couple of informal classes on the basics where I live. Took my cheap rod out to Simmons Park on Apollo Beach side. Had a fun time, but didn't catch anything. Lots of nice views of the Bay from there.

I'll visit DeSoto and the downtown marina/pier area on a day I go see the Rays play.

thanks again for posting the maps-

FISHING get the license for both salt n fresh, at wally world- shirmp is your best bet. I loved fishing off Vinoy park- for bait we go ours off 4th st 60th? you can google bait shops. OFF Weedon island almost any state park... because of so much run off here I'm leary of fresh waters, I'd have to be far away from people for fresh water or brackish water fishing. Every year thesy stop the sales of fertilizer at the stores because of it, but think all those yards and all that rain... go to the gulf- or bay

Good idea for a thread Prius. I used to fish freshwater alot as a kid with my Dad. I'd like to take it back up again down there and would be interested in learning about salt water fishing.

I had to laugh at this. When I was around 18 or so, I got my fishing license from Walmart. It was the most expensive fishing license ever. Not realizing at the time how long it takes a paycheck to clear the bank, I paid for my license with a check. Check bounced. Got a bank fee. Then got Walmart's fee. I think that year it nearly cost me $100 so I made sure I fished my butt off to make it worth my while.

Army annual is $20/yr for salt, fresh, and hunting (I don't hunt).

Guess it's a good deal.
