He seems to be a polarizing figure, does he do any good around St Pete?

He seems to be looking out for their interest regarding not allowing the Rays out of their longterm lease.

I don't like him, but I don't live there so my opinion means nothing. I just wish he was better at compromise in terms of the Rays stadium issue. The sooner it's dealt with, the greater the payoff for St. Pete, whether it be a new stadium at Carillon, or a trade for Tampa's cruise business to allow for a Channelside stadium, or agreement for funds for a massive redevelopment project over the current Trop location. He would have better luck in court compromising on issues like this between the owners and between Hillsborough County than he would trying to fight it out with the gigantic organization that is Major League Baseball.

That being said, I've noticed that the Times is really biased against the guy.

I agree with all your points. I personally don't think he is doing a good job as mayor, but like you, I don't live there.

I do hope he can compromise on that Rays issue, the sooner the better.

He seems interested in lawsuits when it comes to the Rays. Not allowing anyone to try to work out a deal that is good for everyone, including the taxpayers of St Pete, doesnt seem like a good idea. Good politicians can negotiate and compromise, but he just wants to toss threats around?

Agreed, it seems like even when they propose deals to stay in St. Pete, they get shot down.

IMHO, It would be in St. Pete's best interests to let the Rays walk to Tampa, tear down the Trop, and sell the land.

As long as the Rays buy out the remaining decade plus of the lease. Taxpayers paid a lot of money to build the Trop and it needs to be reimbursed.

The taxpayers for sure should be made 100% whole, without a doubt.

"The Rays have been a model organization, averaging nearly 92 wins per year since 2008 and participating in the postseason three times, including their inaugural World Series in 2008. Their .565 winning percentage over the last five years is second among all American League clubs and third in all of Major League Baseball.

"Last year, the 30 major league clubs averaged nearly 2.5 million in total attendance; the Rays, who finished with a 90-72 record, drew 1,559,681, which ranked last in the game.
