I have been reading tons and tons of threads and posts on here and have enjoyed all the insight and information and feel like I know some of you already, lol. So I'm wondering...those who have relocated to the greater Tampa Bay area, what brought you here? Why did you leave your former roots? I think it's interesting why we choose a particular area (unless of course it's returning to family or a job transfer).

In case anyone's interested, here is my story. Since I was a kid, growing up in Mass, I dreamed of beaches and sunshine and always thought I'd end up in California - mainly because that is where my uncle lived. When I finally visited San Diego for the first time as an adult, I knew I did not want to live out my years cold, lol. I was all packed up and ready to go but I chickened out...twice. Ten years later, I am utterly miserable with this cold weather, tired of how little we get for outdoor (warm) activities, and find myself actually being stressed when there is a sunny weekend day and I miss it because I have to attend to something else.

I then visited my friend in FL, fell in love with the gulf coast, and it just renewed my desire to move. I've done alot of research and feel really comfortable with my choice of Tampa Bay. So here I am, finally planning the big move. It'll be rough at first 'til I land on my feet with a permanent job but at this point, what am I waiting for? Honestly, I can't wait!

In my case: Family...all the way from Europe. I left because there was no more family left there. Everyone was here!
The "weather" was never even the slightest consideration in my case, and while I do hate the heat coupled with humidity...I learned how to avoid it. When we briefly moved to Pittsburgh the weather was also the least of my concerns...my routines, and what I Do takes priority over any weather. So IF that doesn't work, nothing works. IMO

PS But if YOU don't move, you will never know if it is truly what you want.

Algia, wow, from Europe?! That's amazing and I admire you for that.

And you are absolutely right - I will never know if I don't take a chance. And that is what trumps my "fear" of leaving what I know - regret. I don't want to let yet another 10 years pass.

Thank you. Life's too short to wait.

We lasted 9 months in Pittsburgh because while all around pretty, daily things did not work, along with the school for my son in any order. BUT IF we didn't move, we would have always wondered "what if we did"! I am not a "what if" person...

Think about it this way: the US has 50 states....then there's the rest of the world and that's about it....Imagine if you had to choose from more than one PLANET to move too.....now THAT would have been a tough choice. LOL

I'm a big believer in things happen for a reason and I try to be open to opportunities that sometimes seem to present themselves at the most interesting times.

Don't get me wrong - where I live (I live right on the border of RI) has some great pluses but, like I said, since I was a kid, I felt like I belonged elsewhere. I don't know how to explain it but it's just a feeling as if I *know* I will be very happy in a warm climate and I have always been drawn to the ocean.

How long have you lived in Tampa?

I am not, I am more of a "make things happen" person....LOL

Been in Florida 12 years now, 7 in Tampa, minus 9 months between '11/'12 in PGH.

Then you'd be good to go...no need for "cold" feet...

Maybe a little of that can rub off on me!

Haha, this is true. I've had (insert # of undivulged years here) years of cold feet. Time to be warm!

For us it was:

The weather - we love the warmth, the sunshine and the humidity. We absolutely do not like cold, cloudy and dry/itchy skin dry weather. We were done with the cold weather a long time ago, but finally made it here last year.

Access to great beaches, quaint towns, golf, fishing, trails, etc. We are outdoors people. This area offers a ton of stuff to do year round. We are outside in the hottest and most humid of days as well. We lived in multiple states over the years, some hotter and just as humid as here.

Family - Many of our family members have moved to Florida over the decades. Some still remain in Massachusetts and New Jersey, but most are here now.

The real estate market. We felt it was the best time to buy here in our entire life. Low prices....for here....and outrageously low interest rates. No time like the present.

Low taxes - we get to keep more of what we make, allowing us to save and spend as we see fit. We got tired of the failed spend/tax/spend/tax policies up north. We lived it first hand and know all too well how poor the results were.

FOOD - there are so many different types of food here. Yum Yum!

JOBS - believe it or not, there were actually many more jobs in "my" field of expertise here than where we moved from. YMMV!

+1 on both, IMO

That is how we look at things. We are not afraid to try new things. The old things will always be there, if we decide we don't like the new.
