I am retired and my main hobby is nature photography. I am relocating to the West coast and will be renting for a few months to decide which area to buy in. I would like either a condo or villa and would be within walking distance of the Pinellas Trail that allows a pet cat. Any info on condos or villas in these areas that allow cats would be appreciated.

Are there any areas in Dunedin, Palm Harbor or Safety Harbor that I should particularly avoid? I like the idea of being within walking distance to a main street and of the 3 cities mentioned I know both Dunedin and Safety Harbor have main streets. Any thoughts on which one is more active, with shops, etc.

Thank you

Palm Harbor is not really walkable, but it is a great area. It has loads of nice subdivisions. Lots of restaurants and shopping, but you will need a car to get around.

Dunedin and Safety Harbor both have walkable, trendy downtown areas. Both have really nice trails. Dunedin has the Pinellas Trail which cuts right through downtown. Safety Harbor has the Bayshore Greenway, which is a lovely trail that runs alongside Tampa Bay.

Dunedin's downtown has more activity than Safety Harbor's. It has more restaurants and more shopping. It's also more crowded. Safety Harbor has many condos that are right along the trail. I'm not sure about Dunedin. The train in Safety Harbor also cuts through the downtown area.

I'm not sure about Dunedin's bad areas, but Safety Harbor doesn't really have any that I know of. It does have some areas that are more run down. Harbor Heights is one neighborhood I know of that's a little sketchy. I believe there are some streets northwest of the train tracks that are also a bit sketchy, but I don't think either area is "bad" … just run down.

Not sure if the OP is still around, but it's tough to find a condo anywhere around Dunedin downtown that allows pets. We tried very hard, mostly looking at 55+ condos, walking distance to downtown and an easy ride to the trail. But most condos ban pets entirely. We gave up, and took a no-pet condo, which we really love. There's some hope of an open vote within the next year or so to allow pets--meanwhile there are many infractions, especially cats. But that's just one complex--another one I know is really strict about the rules, that one's right on the water in Dunedin.
