Hi, Tampa dwellers! We are looking into the area (possible work relocation) and I'm having trouble finding good Web sites just by googling. I'm looking for some kind of mom's board that might tell me what's going on for families with young children, a local site for finding out what's going on around town, cultural sites, etc. We've learned a lot about neighborhoods and schools online and from this page, but we're trying to get that elusive "feel" for the community. What sports do kids play there? What are the big activities, how can we get involved? What do people like to do? What are the area traditions? Any advice and any feedback you have is most welcome! Thanks!

Hello there,

Speaking from some experience, I have received the most benefit from reading, reading and READING threads here. I've also contacted a couple of property management companies and chambers of commerce and they have all seemed more than happy to share their input on the area.

Thanks so much! I have been working my way through the threads. I'll tell you, these boards to make Tampa/St. Pete more appealing! Lots of good housing information, and things I'd never considered, that are very different from VA.

I will say, I'm not exactly sure what the difference is -- Tampa and St. Petersburg are independent cities that grew to the point of basically running into one another? Do they offer different things? I think, coming from the DC area, that the traffic complaints just won't compare to what we're used to. The quality of life is a huge draw for us.

I am not down there yet myself (live in New England) but there are tons of "which is better, St. Pete or Tampa" threads and if you care to break it down even more, the neighborhoods within each are discussed. So it all comes down to what YOU are looking for. For example, when my bf and I come down, we will be renting. And more specifically, we like private type rentals (i.e. not large apartment complexes), but someone else could like the opposite, be looking to buy, want near the ocean, or more inland so what is best for us may not be good at all for you. You get the idea.

You're not going to get more honest opinions than here - both positive and negative. So keep on reading!

And I hear ya about traffic. If I leave my house within a half hour difference, my commute can be upwards of two hours and I only hae a 40 min. drive.

Yep, that's our experience with traffic here.

I've learned a fair amount about Tampa neighborhoods w/kids, but not as much about St. Pete. But the historic houses in St. Pete really appeal to us. I'll just keep reading. :-)

Thanks, and good luck to you in your move!

Thank you and good luck to you too!

Here is one thread that might be helpful in case you didn't see it:

If you could live anywhere in the tampa bay / st pete area (under 300k) with kids, where would you live?

Thank you! I'll check it out. I just read another thread from folks that sounded very much like us, kids in school, same price range, etc., and wrote down a ton of neighborhoods.
