Hey folks,
So I just moved here a couple months ago. I'm 24 and lived in the same city my entire life before moving here, and my girlfriend and entire social network is up north. I've made some friends among people I work with day in and day out but it would be nice to have some social contacts in the outside world as well

Problem is, seems like everyone my age goes to bars and it just doesn't do it for me. I'm a coffee shop/movie/etc. kind of person. Any suggestions on places to go in Tampa to meet people around my age who aren't primarily concerned with getting wasted at the bars most nights of the week? I work a TON (i.e. 60 hours a week minimum), but am getting frustrated that there doesn't seem to be anyone I can hang out with during those rare times I'm not working.

This doesn't mean I don't drink, or have anything against people who go to bars a lot, it just isn't my thing. Work too hard and usually like to do something more relaxed when I'm not working, just haven't found a place to meet like-minded people. Any ideas?

There are many social things that happen in the area. Look up creativeloafing.com calendar of events. There are listings there for all the coffee shops, art walks, festivals, social calendar, do you play sports, there are quite a few sports clubs in the area.

This link is a great social calendar for most things happening in the Bay area.(Even thoguh its attached to a realtor, this calendar is a MUST)
Bayshore FL Homes for Sale & Real Estate by (broken link)

Get involved in your new community - volunteer - there are many programs that NEED volunteers in the area.

Hope these things help.

Maybe you could try out "Emerge Tampa". Emerge Tampa It's a young professionals leadership organization through the Tampa Chamber of Commerce--a way to get involved in the community & meet new people.

Does work count as a hobby when you work longer hours for free?

On a more serious note - big on tennis and haven't gotten to play since I came here, though I can't afford a pro club membership unfortunately - but if there's a cheap recreation-department-style alternative that would be ideal. That's about it really as far as sociable hobbies go - play a multitude of instruments but definitely don't have time to join a band/orchestra or anything like that.

Take up golf. Tampa has a lot of singles leagues, if I remember right. As someone who used to play tennis 2-3x a week, I know that the sport has lost a lot of its popularity. Why? I don't really know.

Tampa is pretty much a BAR Scene city. Seriously obsessed drinkers here. I once had a girl dump me because I didn't drink enough. LOL Good luck at finding someone single worth a darn though. They don't call it Trampa for nothing.

Jason,

Tennis is the 2nd most popular sport to golf. You didn't tell us where you live, so I'm taking a chance you live in the Tampa Bay area. Hillsborough County maintains lots of Parks, many with tennis courts, and sitting smack dab in great neighborhoods. It's tougher to find the one's with lights, but it can be done. Try a search here ---> Hillsborough County Government Online - Parks - Recreation (http://www.hillsboroughcounty.org/parks/recreation/recreationfacilities.cfm - broken link). Pick a court and go with a bucket of balls. At a minimum, you will expel some energy. I think there are some junior leagues, but it's been some years since I checked into it.

Also, since you appear to be active, there are many bicycle and running clubs and most get together either early in the morning or on the weekends.

You might also try the Trail. It runs North/South from Hernando County through to Pinellas. It has several names...Pinellas Trail, Suncoast Trail, Upper Tampa Bay Trail, but they're all connected and the same thing IMO. Great place to run, bike, blade and meet some like minded people.

Good luck!
TampaKaren

Have you ever been to Whiskey Park on Howard? The women (and men) there are so sleazy. The guys would literally walk right up to women and start rubbing on them.... and the girls didn't mind at all. It was unbelievably sad to see.

I grew up in Tampa and then moved to the DC area for 15 years. What a huge culture shock to move back here and see how far downhill the city has gone. Its sad to see every event in Tampa now revolve around getting drunk. Gasparilla used to be a fun event and now they have to have a separate parade that you can take your kids to. Even at the last Children's Parade, I saw so many people lugging around coolers of beer and getting trashed.
