You are aware that they are selling subscriptions at 90 to 95% off of the cover price, right? You can get a year of Thu/Fri/Sat/Sun issues for under $15.

Considering that the delivery person needs to get paid, they are selling their papers at a loss to build their circulation numbers.

Exactly. I don't know how much they are making or not making per paper they sell, but the newspaper model has been predicated on ad sales. Every newspaper in the nation the NYT included are still trying to figure how to revamp that model to a sustainable one that better matches today's consumer. I would find it hard to believe that the tribune is the only paper in the nation that has figured that out.

My neighbor works for the Tribune. They laid off quite a bit of people in her department and her salary was reduced. Now she works more time for less money. It seems they are operating thinly staffed--not exactly a sign of doing great, IMO.

Take a closer look behind the scenes next time before you decide to jump to conclusions. The other folks in this thread have kindly pointed out why.

This is happening at newspapers all over the country.

I still like reading the paper, but if I was on a very strict/tight budget, it would be the first cut because everything can be found on their website (news).

The circulation increased so much partly due to the previous mentioned fact that they are selling subscriptions at a loss but moreso that they are now counting digital subscriptions in the total numbers.

No, it's only one part of the equation. If it were true, they would take the doors off the corner newspaper boxes.

Good content costs money. That's why you don't have to pay to read a couple of art school dropouts whining about the governor in Creative Loafing. On the other hand, the Wall Street Journal will cost you up to $400 a year for a subscription.

every newspaper pads their circulation numbers. i don't think there's any doubt that the Tribune's demise is not as certain as everyone here says. like i said before, people have been saying the Tribune is near the end for YEARS
