Hello! My husband and I have been talking about moving to FL for some time now and we had planned on 2 years from now, however a job that my husband qualifies for came open and he applied. It will be a couple weeks before we know for sure if he got it but I like to be prepared just in case so here I am

The job is in St. Petersburg and while my husband has been to the area several times (years ago), I have never been. My FL experiences are Disney and the Atlantic coast, so I know nothing about the Gulf side of the state.

We have 3 kids (almost 13, 11, & 8) so schools are important. Our oldest is big into sports, he plays football. basketball, and occasional baseball so a school or area with opportunities for these sports would be great. Our plan is to rent for at least a year then look into buying. Our budget would allow for us to spend about $1500 or less per month on a rental, and we would like a family friendly neighborhood with other kids so our kids can have friends nearby. We are not into the nightlife so that is not important but we do enjoy good restaurants, shopping, and beaches but nothing too touristy.

Any idea on where to look?

Thanks!!

Would strongly recommend selecting a school very carefully. A lot of the schools down here have phenomenal student athletes. I was fortunate to grow up in a small area up North that gave me the opportunity to play football, basketball, run track and play baseball in the Summer. I could never have done that down here. I like to think I could have played baseball, but who knows and that was a long time ago.

But getting in one of the school districts where the talent level is much higher than what you are seeing now could really effect the kids.

If St Pete is where the job is could look up HWY 19 at Tarpon Springs and Northward or look on the East side of the bridge at Parrish and places like that. Would recommend a trip down before hand and see if you can't take in a game or two (I know it may be off season for what you need), or see if you can find some game clips on YouTube for comparison.

It appears there are some charter schools and fundamental schools in St. Pete that you can try for by lottery. Does anyone have an idea what the odds are?

Is that based on anything? Actual figures or maybe what you've seen among families in the area?

Florida roundup: charter schools, school choice lotteries, gifted education & more | redefinED

This may not pertain to the specific school but I found this quickly for the Tampa area.

From the article: 1 in 3 applicants get in at half of the Charter Schools and for 4 of the 185 Charter Schools it is less than 1 in 10. So not good odds and I am sure it has to depend on how many open seats there are.

Thanks for the school info. We will start to seriously check into them just in case the job does come through. I figured that the talent level would be high given the area.

Thanks again,
Tina
