There is a huge diversity in the type of people in Tampa - and Florida in general. It comes from the fact that we have had HUGE population growth. I think you will find this in any desirable, growing place all along the southern US from Florida to California. People have flocked to the south for the weather.
This is not as prevalent in the northeast or mid west where population growth has been flat or negative.

I am always a bit leery of people who only want to associate with their "own kind".

It may not be as noticeable in places such as NYC but you have million $ apartments right near the projects. This might get even more prevalent as I believe NYC is getting ready to start leasing land right on project property for market rate apartments to be built, this would put $4000 a month 2 bedroom rentals next to section 8 apartments.

NYC has low income housing laws, even new buildings have to have some apartments that are affordable, combine that with rent stabilization programs you have a quite a mix

Yes, LA, San Fran, DC and others also have it.
The new apartments going up on the NYC projects land will have about 20% for low income housing.

The OP is right, look at these lower middle class cheaply built houses for sale in Tampa for $500k. Who would want to live there? Blech...

well lets NOT make Tampa- FLORIDA, its a big state and Miami is has got it all... Tampa has sections and you just have to know where you are going. If you did not get a realtor to show you around , oh well... and there are some very good schools, just depends where... new Tampa /Pasco has been filing lately with that part, but I will agree tampa is alot more scaled back in the BLING... area as a whole, but make the best of it while you are here and be happy you get to leave next year,

I always thought Tennessee and such were coined as red-neck. But nowhere, and I do mean nowhere, I've seen is as red as parts of Tampa.
Are you related to the British Royal family by any chance? Just imagine if you lived in a $80K or less neighborhood.

Personally, having spent only 6 months here, I think you've seen nothing or very little of FL. Btw, the backbone of America has always been what you call 'red necks'. I suggest you move to Switzerland, but with the financial crisis in Europe, even that might not suit your standards.
