Just curious. What temperature do you like to set your A/C in the summer, how big is your house/apartment, and how much do you pay for electricity every month? Particularly interested in 1 BR or studio apartments but everyone is welcome to reply.

That really depends on your system, exposure, and insulation among other variables. I have a 600 sq ft 1 bedroom apartment on the second floor. In summer, I keep the thermostat on 74 when I'm home and 70 for sleeping. I turn it off when I'm not here during the day. My electric bill is around $60 in summer $35 in winter. However, I have a very well insulated apartment that is well shaded and in a breezy area near the water.

A friend has a similar size apartment with an older system and his place isn't nearly as wel insulated. He keeps the temps about the same, but his electric bill runs $140 in the summer.

I would say the determining factor on cost is whether you are at home during the day or not. If not, you can let it heat up and then fire up the AC in the evenings. A small space such as a studio or 1 BR should cool off very quickly, so don't hesitate to completely shut the AC off during the day.

A programmable thermostat can turn the AC off when you leave and start it again 30 minutes before you get home, and you'll never know it was off all day.

Electric companies LOVE customers that run their AC all day long. Don't be one of those people.
